I lost my Mavis piggy this morning, very sudden and unexpected. Last night she was wheeking for her greens and popcorning in her hay, this morning I found her collapsed and she quickly passed away. Her age was estimated at 1 when we got her about 3.5 years ago, which seems so very young for a piggle to pass. I'm devastated, there was just no warning, no weight loss, no sign of any illness, nothing at all. Both other piggles seem healthy although a bit distressed. They relied on mavis for their confidence and are clearly not doing well. Flo was always a bit dippy anyway, but Hilda (I would imagine was Mavis' sister and never been apart from her) is really freaked out. Theyre eating and drinking etc as usual, but seem very confused and panicky. I had been starting to build a second layer to the cage with the intention of adding a neutered boar/another sow to the group, but now I'm thinking I may have to add an extra before Ive finished the extra level (the cage was 2ft3x5ft, and adding potentially 4/5sqft extra with the second layer, minus the effect of a ramp) ideally a leader personality pig as neither of the two are confident at all. Nowhere near here seems to have any sows though, and I dont know if the cage size will be ok to add another piggle to.

Do I keep looking for a rescue and hope the girlies cope? Would I need more cage space urgently or should I just continue with the plans I have which will be a few weeks to finish (painting, lino glue dry etc in this weather, got to get a few more bits of wood and stuff)? Are there rescues further afield that would rehome this far?

I have no advice, but I'm sorry you lost Mavis. I hope the others will soon settle down. :)

I'm so sorry for ** loss.

Iv only had my piggie 2 weeks but dont no what id do without her.

I'm sure whatever * decide to do will be the right one x

Oh dear I am sorry :( So she as 4.5 ish? Thats a fairly good age, although I know there are many older pigs on here.

I would try not to panic because at least your other 2 have eachother, I mean you don't have a lone pig left in there even tho they are not confident - perhaps they need to adjust.

I will leave someone who knows more about the rescue's to answer your question there as I have no experience with them - just wanted to say sorry & try not to panic too much about the remaining two, I know its upset the balance but they have eachother still for a bit of support xx

Hugs sorry you lost Mavis so suddenly. As others have said your remaining girls are a pair so neither will be lonely. They may be lost for a little while but they have each other. If in time you want to add to the pair then there are lots of wonderful rescues some of which rehome nationally for the perfect home. I am miles from a rescue up here in Scotland but I have rehomed from Wales and Yorkshire so it can be sorted so don't worry. Where are you based? We can point you towards reputable local rescues near you. Not sure about cage sizes as I am a bit useless with measurements.

Don't panic I'm sure your girls will be fine together until you are ready to add more piggies.
