I had my midwife visit yesterday to bring me a birth box as I am having a homebirth sometime in the next couple of weeks. My midwife has 3 guinea pigs so spent some time fussing over my lot and talking about how great my setup is etc. She then went on to say 'can you move them outside for the next couple of weeks as it may not be me attending your birth and the other midwives may not be happy about the pigs being in the livingroom while you birth'. I dont understand it! Its not like the pigs are going to jump out of the cages and into the birth pool with me is it! I politely said they will be staying where they are rolleyes Anyone know of a reason my piggies cant be in the room as I give birth?

The only reason I can think of is hygiene reasons. Some people may be fussy and with all the problems associated with bugs etc feel it best to move them to be on the safe side.

But if you don't move them and go into labour what can they do? All they can suggest is moving you to hospital and if you refuse they have to help you surely?

I think you are brave having babs at home, good luck! x

Thank you :) I had a 50 minute labour with my first which is why I have chosen to have this one at home. My hospital is an hour away so chances are I wouldnt make it in time!

And I thought I was quick with 3 hours with Emily and 2 hours with Caitlin! :(|) They wanted to move me to the Delievery Suite with Caitlin as I was measuring small, I told them well of course I am as the bump had dropped! mallethead But then waters broke, Jesus Christ it was horrific and she was born an hour later!

never again! :(|)

good luck with the birth!

the only reason I can think of to is hygiene but you can always say the pigs will help you relax and are something to I dunno look at if you want a "mental break" but seen as though I havent had kids yet I dont know if that will be the case?

or just say that their banter is a nice "background" noise as it is really

another reason which would concern me if i was having a home birth would be the impact the noise would make as it may scare them, not that I'm saying you would be noisy but lets face it not many births are quiet, just that your piggies may get distressed if they think you are in pain? x

I tend to agree, that's the only reason I can think of why I would hesitate (if it were me giving birth that is!) They don't react well to loud and sudden noises. I've never had kids so I don't know what's involved, but I've seen the telly and the screaming!

Best of luck with the birth whatever you decide to do :(|)

I was told that if I screamed I would be injected with pain killer! I told the big butch midwife where to get off! And that wasn't the gas and air talking! :(|)

I'm worried about distressing my piggies now as I never thought about that! :red Going to have to see where I can put them for now.
Thanks everyone :)

hehe well trust me i have heard some women scream the hospital down lol i guess it depends on the birth/pain and the individuals pain threshold

I know its a bloomin' hassle moving them but I would to suit them and to suit the midwif e who may kick up a fuss! Must admit the midwife he delievered Caitlin was fab but Emily's second midwife was a nightmare! Luck of the draw! :(|)

It may not be anything to do with your birth but (shock) some people just don't like guinea pigs and if the midwives really don't know anything about them they may assume all kinds of wrong things. I have had people visit me who simply can't pick them up - everyone is different. The "Rats" word is frequently used !

I think the most likely reason is it's probably just policy to have no animals whatsoever in the environment - for the benefit of everyone - midwives, parents and any medical team that may have to attend. I'm sure everyone has to have their dogs and cats put away too. Animals can react in unpredictable ways during times of stress so I suspect the midwife is just playing ultra safe.

I shouldn't worry about it - enjoy the arrival of the little one.

Keep us posted. :)

Me and hubby have just walked around trying to figure out where we could put them but just dont have the space anywhere :( We have two 6x3 C&C's so they're not small. I may have to split them (the 2 groups live side by side just separated by grids at mo) and put one lot in the kitchen and another lot in the baby's nursery which I really dont want to do. Aaaargh I wish I had known this was going to be a problem earlier than this especially as I am now getting lots of cramp and back pain so looks like labour is close mallethead

Ok, have a solution now. We are going to get all our extra grids out and build 2 smaller temp C&C's in the kitchen and place piggies in there as soon as I go into labour so they will only be in there for the duration of labour and birth. I was only in labour for 50 mins last time so they will be ok for a little while. Phew, was starting to worry :)
