Hi I am worried about my piggy Doogy. He is squeaking when he pees and has lost a bit of weight this month. I am going to book a vet visit tomorrow but don't know how piggy savvy our vets are in my area and wondered if anyone could let me know what they think it could be. He is eating as normal but drinking a little more than he used to - my piggies don't seem to drink a lot but Doogy has been drinking more than he used to. I have put Doogy in the run tonight on his own but as yet he hasn't pooped. My other piggy Beany seems to be a little bit porky so I don't know whether he is eating all the fresh veg and leaving none for Doogy so I thought I would split them up for meal times in the evening. The only problem I have now is that Beany is looking everywhere for Doogy ! I am so worried :-( Can anyone help please :-)

Generally, any squeaking when peeing is a sign of UTI (urinary tract infection), no home recipes for this type. Your vet will prescribe antibiotic for Doogy. It's best to try and keep a track of the weight loss. It can be difficult with one ill piggy as the other one will naturally eat as much as they can and sometimes can also bully the weaker one. Best to ensure 2 of everything in your cage and that will help with even distribution, or even take to feeding Doogy on your lap instead.

Hope that helps to reassure you, but absolutely first thing is get to the vet tomorrow.

I agree with @Mother Hubbard one of our boars has had cystitis, was given meds, but it's come back and he's been given different meds by a different vet, we've been told if he keeps having problems after the meds then he needs to have an xray on his bladder. Hopefully this new lot of antibiotics he's on will help.

I hope everything goes well for your guinea at the vets.

Thank you - I already have two of everything in their cage (they have a 2 x 4 c & c with a top level 2 x 1) but I have put Doogy in the run on his own for his evening veg (they get fed twice a day) and he has eaten it all :-) He seems to squeak a lot more when the sheep whistles are on countryfile :-) but I will still be ringing the vet as soon as they open in the morning - what type of antibiotic should I expect the vet to prescribe as I have read a lot about meds that are not really right for piggys :-( x

Hi - I have taken Doogy to the vet this morning and he has had an ultrasound (he is not impressed with his bald belly!). The vet said that she couldn't see a stone but it looks like there is a thickening on the bladder wall which could be from cystitis. She has prescribed him a 14 day course of Baytril but if there is no improvement by the end of the week I have to take him back and they will xray him. He has just taken his first dose like an angel and is now having a nap. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and will let you know how we get on - thanks again for your advice x

Hi @Piggymum

remember to give probiotics while he's on antibiotics :) they can upset their tummy. You can get probiotics from Pets at home if you have one near you? If not then you can get Avipro plus online.

Have a look at this thread, scroll to the Probiotics section, there are also other recommended probiotics on there :)

Probiotics, Recovery Foods And Vitamin C: Overview With Product Links

In regards to the cystitis, my guinea is also going through this atm, his started in July, he was given Baytril, finished the course but still didn't seem right, was taken to another vet who thought he was just getting over the cystitis, gave him metacam (did your vet give your piggie pain relief?), all seemed sort of ok after he finished the metacam although he still didn't seem quite himself, I then heard him squeaking while going to the toilet, checked his urine on Saturday, blood again, so he's been to yet another vet and has been given a different antibiotic call Sulfatrim and he's also back on metacam. The vet said if he continues to have problems then he'll have to have an xray. So pretty much the same as your poor guinea.

Thanks Kerrie74 - I didn't realise about the probiotics (thanks for the link) and am just off to Pets at Home to get some hay so will add that to the shopping list :D The vet didn't give me any/mention pain relief for Doogy  and I didn't ask about it  hope your guinea feels better soon x

My boar wasn't prescribed Metacam either when he had his bladder problems.

Let us know how Doogy gets on.

Baytril is fine for piggys, but not necessarily the best antibiotic for UTIs. If Doogy isn't showing any improvement, ask about Septrin, which is sometimes more successful.

Healing vibes for all the piggies out there. It is a worry when you have illness with one of your fluffy bundles of joy. It's easy to forget how stressful it is.

It is a worry! Fingers crossed for Emma too, Claire x I was just wondering also can I give Doogy his probiotics in his water bottle as he is eating and drinking normally - and I'm not really sure how much he needs? And will it affect my other guinea Beany if he drinks it (not that he drinks as much as Doogy) ? I have bought the powdered one from pah. This may sound like a silly question but it's all new to me and I am learning loads from you guys - very much appreciated  x

Some guinea pigs are put off the taste of their water when something is added. Also, the p@h contains vit C too - and vit C degrades when exposed to light. when 2 of my 3 were on antibiotics, I put up a separate bottle with probiotic powder added - so my guinea pigs could choose either plain water - or the water with probiotic added .

Thought I'd give an update on Doogy. He wasn't getting any better with his antibiotics so we went along to the vets where he had another scan and an xray which confirmed he has a bladder stone  He is now on Metacam also but is still squeaking He is booked in for an operation tomorrow morning and to say that I am petrified is an understatement as this is all new to me. I am panicking about giving him his meds post op as he is a bit of a wriggle bum :D I have been reading as much as I can and have set up a "hospital cage" for Doogy although I am wondering whether I should partition off a part of his cage that he shares with Beany instead? I am going to put his hay in his food bowl and am going to try and make a fleece hidey thing if I can - at the moment he sleeps in a plastic igloo. Would appreciate your feedback, healing vibes and lots of crossing of fingers x

Hope all goes well tomorrow. I think the idea of a hospital cage is so that the wound can be kept clean and any friends can't bother the wound so a partion in his usual cage would be ok. What is he bedded on usually?

Hi and thanks Helen, he is bedded on fleece normally - I bought some vet bed today and will be putting white towels on top, with fleece in the straw/eating area. I have waterproof fleece cage liners in his usual cage but have none for the spare cage so am using newspaper under puppy pads under vet bed under towels (phew!). His normal cage is c & c but I have no spare grids (I will have to order some more but in the meantime I think I will have to stick to the second cage). I was just a little worried about separating the two of them.

Vetbed is the best thing to use post op so that's good, as it will wick away any wee. You could put the 2 cages next to each other?

Thanks Kerrie74 x I have now moved my living room around so that I can put the cages next to each other - the spare cage is quite big too! Doogy seems to be squeaking even more tonight and I'm really stressing for him - I hate it when my fur babies are hurting :td: x

Sorry only just caught up with this thread. Bucketfulls of healing vibes being sent from the girls &I.

Speedy recovery to doogy  :luv:

I think some members sprinkle the powdered probiotics directly on to favorite veggies.
Or if u were to syringe freshly mixed powder &water together that would increase his water intake to help flush throug his bladder &you would also know how much of each he would be getting.

If he's having recovery food after his op then maybe add the water&probiotic to the recovery food. Should be less stressful feeding it all at once instead of separately.

What time is his operation booked for?
Fingers &paws all crossed
Xx

Another update on Doogy and some more advice please - Doogy had his surgery today and is now home, he has eaten his veg and some hay. The vet gave me some Recovery for him if he didn't start eating but the instructions are missing - should I still give it to him even though he's eating ? Also he's just had a poo and pee in the same spot and his pee looks pinky like blood (big panic) - is this normal post surgery ? I have a follow up appointment in the morning at 10 but wondered if anyone who has gone through this could give me some advice please x

@PiggyOwner @Elwickcavies @Abi_nurse may be able to help?

Probably be wise just to top up his eating with recovery food to keep the food going through. He might not feel like eating when the painkillers worn off a bit.

Sorry no real advice but loads of healing vibes being sent. Love the girls &I xx
