Dora came to Barc earlier this year and was found to have ovarian cysts
Information About 'keyhole Surgery' To Treat Ovarian Cysts
She had successful surgery but continued to have bladder problems which were attributed to interstitial cystitis. We decided not to rehome her and she was paired up with another bladder piggy, Eleanor. Eleanor had been on antibiotics (Baytril) for very smelly urine. After a few weeks l noticed both of them were smelly and had wet bottoms and were passing sludgy urine. The vet sent off urine samples and both piggies had the same infection with a corynebacterium (spelling?) which was resistant to Baytril and Septrin and the only antibiotic we could use in piggies was doxycycline.
So after 2 weeks treatment Eleanor is much better but Dora looks miserable, wet and in pain. I was considering euthanasia. But the vet upped the dose of Doxycycline and added in buprenorphine painkiller by injection. After a week she is dry and much more comfortable! We have a way to go but Dora is not ready to give up just yet!
