Dory's bladder stone is almost pea size!

Here's my contribution to the bladder stone portrait gallery. Removed from a 6 month old neutered boar. South Wales so a soft water area, no idea on diet.

No further info on the composition of the stone as the pig was not mine at the time of the operation.

How is Dory doing today?

Oh my that's huge Suzy! :(

I wonder if it's not necessarily the type of water in the area, but also the amount of water they drink. I carefully offer mine extra water from a syringe to drink every day as well as having their water available 24/7. All 3 of mine are good drinkers, but our first pair weren't & they did develop stones, fortunately being female they actually passed them, they were pear shaped not round?

Also I am wondering do mature male piggies get prostate problems like humans? Assuming they have prostates :)

Enlarged prostates can lead to water infections/kidney infections in humans so I wondered if piggies can suffer the same rolleyes

Thanks for everyone's well wishes for Dory :)

i'm pleased to report that he seems to be back to his old self, squeaking on when the fridge open, giving me the hard stare from his cage when he wants to wander about my house etc etc rolleyes

I've been syringing him 10mls of water 3 times a day. He bloomin hates it. He's almost jumped off my lap a couple of times. Going to have to try the towel wrapping next time. I'm really scared of another stone forming quickly - it seems to happen v.v.v often. I have some cystease on order (hopefully it'll come soon), should I get some uriflow too?

Hi PiggiePal

That is good news! Thelma hated it too but now looks for the syringe and takes it happily I don't even have to hold her. He will get used to it just don't make it too traumatic for him. I put some veg juice or tomatoe juice, just half a ml or so just to flavour it (you could use Cranberry juice or ribena) just something to make it tasty. With Thelma I also heat it up v slightly (just a 5 sec zap inthe microwave) if its cold in the winter she refuses it point blank until its warmed (spoilt or what!).

The uriflow is your choice, for me its a comfort thing...so far its all worked and I dare not change anyhting. I was recommended it by someone who swore by it though.

Good luck!

So pleased to hear Dory is doing so well. Sorry I don't have any experience of bladder issues so can't offer much advice but lots of well-wishes coming your/his way x

Wow - What a stone Dory glad to hear he's doing so well.

Can I ask before the stone had he had bladder issue's (ie UTI's?) and was a urine analysis ever done? If it was do you know if they found 'minute' crystals in his urine?

Sending some more healing vibes to Dory! x

Hi Flintstones,

He'd not had any issues at all with UTI's while I'd had him (1.5years) and literally just seemed to develop this out of the blue. He has always drunk quite alot of water compared with my others but i'd never noticed he had any issues so no urine analysis had been done.

He doesn't seem quite as well today, bit quieter and let me catch him plus his poos are a bit smelly. I'm guessing it's something to do with the bloomin baytril. The avipro and cystease arrived this morning though so hopefully will help.

So paranoid he's just going to get another stone straight away :...
