I dont know if this is normal. But i think it is.

I have just put a grass tray in for Dot and Bernie. Basicly a flat piece of turf with dry grass growing out to graze on.

Bernie see it first and had a good munch, but now Dot has taken over and doubled in size. She is the smaller pig and the submissive one from what i know

Is she puffing up to defend it? This happens during veg time too. Everytime

I don't have an answer but I'm interested in your question. My Meg has the same thing, to the point that I get panicky and think she has bloated up or is in pain when she gets her veg, especially during cage cleans when she is on floor time with the rest of them. She behaves normally though and is dominant anyway, so maybe it is just a 'mine!' signal. I'm quite relieved to hear of another pig who does this!

As soon as she stopped guarding food she deflated. I think its the fur they puff up. I noticed it stand on end and her hackles on her neck go up. Maybe she is doninant?

Puggle does this, she usually has the smoothest fur but she goes like a hedgehog when she has bloat but also if she's annoyed with Blodwen or if there are carrots to guard! Puggle is tiny but she fluffs up like a ginger furry puffer fish porcupine thing on occasion... we've been watching her closely as last weekend she fluffed up with bloat but then Blod was taking advantage of her being ill to boss her around and shove her out of the best hidey places and steal her dinner so she fluffed up even more!

When our girls eat they fluff up too, i think it is a defensive mechanism while they eat

It is funny to see, now I'm sure its ok. Must be to make sure they get their portion. I suppose this means Bernie is in çharge acrually

Lucy is my veg time fluffy pig.
As soon as the fresh lands in the cage she seems to double in size - I assume it is becasue she wants to look big and scary so Harry doesn't think he can chase her away from the fresh.

As a slight aside Harry would never try to do anything like chase Lucy away - he is an extermly hen pecked husboar.
