I know this sounds stupid but I have a double hutch but only keep the guinea pigs at the top but as I was cleaning them out today I thought I would put the stairs in so they could go up and down but one came up okay but it took quite a while for the other one to come up but then she slid down it again! Is there anyway I can get them used to it!? I dont want them to hurt themselves! It's the Rose cottage from Pets @ Home!
& whether there's anything that I can put on the stairs so they can grip on more!?
:)

I had a hutch purpose built for mine - with a ramp which was designed to be less steep than any I have seen ready made.

Plus the ramp had rounded steps on it (so the sharp edges didn't put them off) and high sides to stop the little darlings falling off.

Then I also added carpet tiles to make it bliss (they are easy to cut and replace as need be). Everything to make it easy and safe.

Do they use it? No - only to go up and they love that bit, but 8 weeks later not one of the four would venture down rolleyes

I even put all the special toys they love downstairs, their very favourite veggies etc., etc.

We've all given up on the downstairs bit :(

You could try putting their favourite veggies on the ramp to encourage them.

I tried with the kale, she kept on squeaking but tried to get up but she couldnt, in the end she did but thats when she slip!

I think that's the same as Emmiie here has?
She has put a little house under the end to make it less steep

You could try a bannister type thing on it to make it less daunting? Or a ramp tunnel?

Or maybe Pollie could make one?

I'm gunna see if I can do what Emmie's done with her hutch, or I might order the tunnel!
The hutch is stupid how its designed!

One of my girls was more wary than the others and lifting the end with a little house (like Emiiee has) to make it less steep worked great. Plus it's an extra place to snooze ;)

Yeah, thats what I'm gunna do try and get someone to build a house like Emmie's!
Yeah, thats true :D

Sorry I missed that I was working nights last night so not long been up zzz

I'm not sure which size it was :( Which one did you get?

I got the Rabbit one as the guinea pig one seemed too small!

I had the same problem with my hutch, and I was going to put carpet on the stairs for grip because my pigs kept sliding down!but I got this stuff in B&Q and its for the end of furniture to stop it from scraping wood floors!Kinda like carpet really.
Anyway it came in a little square piece and I just could it into strips and stuck them on as extra steps, they have sticky stuff on the back so it sticks straight on!
It worked perfect for me!:)
