I have recently purchased a hutch for two male pigs.the hutch is a double unit where there is a slope inside.is it normal that guinea pigs prefer not to use downstairs.if i pu them downstairs then they are there for a matter of seconds before they go up.any advice please

As long as ive had the boys so about for weeks.they have chewy tubes for bith of them.as soon as one goes upstairs the other follows and ive never seen them go down it.

It could be quite steep for them to feel safe walking down, also if the hole is large or has open sides they may feel its a bit scary.

Do you have any pics or a link to the hutch so we can maybe suggest how to make the ramp more inviting to go down?

Hi, my 2 girls have a double decker hutch and they are exactly the same! For example, today they've been out on the grass in their run all day, gradually they got brave and didn't hide - i've put them back now (downstairs) and the both flitted sraight up the ramp! Although they have stayed out and not gone into the bedroom - I'm not worrying, it takes them a lot of time to feel comfortable, i've had my two for about 4 weeks and they're definitley still adjusting to their new home - it will take time, so long as they're happy! Enjoy them x

Thank you for your help.I will try and get some pictures on here.My other idea was to make some changes to the hutch and block the bottom and top off so that i could put two more guinea pigs at the bottom.Id love to rehome more

How big is each floor?

I have done this with two hutches where each floor is 5ft x 2ft - it was cheaper than buying one with two separate floors! I have a pair on both floors in one, and in the other a pair on top and a trio underneath as the two girls in the trio are very tiny - sadly one was impregnated at 6 weeks old and as all her energy went on the pups, she has basically stunted growth. She is a wonderful gorgeous girly just smaller than her 'baby' (who is over a year old now!)

i would say about the same as your dimensions but would need to double check. If it was possible would you have males downstairs as well as i have males upstairs

Well I have various pairs and families, I have 15 of my own piggies, 2 on long term foster, and 2 hopefully on their way soon from Windwhistle Warren :) the 2 on long term foster are my only pair of boys and I keep them above a pair of girls as I figured a male and female below them would give off more 'mating' smells than just girls...seems to be fine so far, they are a very well established pair though.

It would probably be best to stick to an all boy household if you can, as some boys will be set off by the slightest thing and you don't want any fights!

Mine are forever downstairs in the play area bit!
they hardly ever go to the top (probably cause meen mummy brought a hutch that opens at the top, so they have nowhere yo run when its nail clipping time )

I'm sure they will get used to it.
