My 4 and a half year old guinea pig pepper first lost a bit of weight in september, i did get a bit concerned but nothing really changed- it didn’t effect her whatsoever and over time she seemed to put weight back on. However over the past 2 weeks or so she seems to have lost a bit more weight as well as drinking significantly more (although she always has been a big drinker) she’s still very, if not more active than usual and very hungry( eats all her veg and any pellets i give her and she’s in my bedroom so i do constantly observe her eating hay). My sister has an extremely weak immune system and so none of us are allowed out of the house at all at the moment with everything going on- so i can’t really take her to the vet :((. Anyone have any ideas on what could be going on and/ or how i can help her? Other than these symptoms she’s acting normally.

Drinking more and losing weight could be a sign of diabetes, but I'm in no way saying it is this. But when you said drinking more, that's the first thing that came to mind. Hope all turns out ok 👍.

Can anyone you trust collect your guinea pig and take to the vets for you?

I’m afraid we can’t make a diagnosis without hands on examination. And we’re not vets either. The only think you can do is to get your piggy to a vet. As suggested above, is there someone who could collect your piggy and take to the vet?

Please start weighing daily rather than weekly now - at the same time each day and preferably before veg.

I stopped feeding surgery veg- only giving them cucumber, a tiny amount of corn and a small bit of pepper. Pepper seemed to stop drinking as much and her weight stabilised. All seems fine now so i’m thinking probably diabetes?

Maybe, I'm not sure to be honest . It'd take a vet to tell you for definite . Glad things are better

It’s good her weight has stabilised. But I think she should still be seen. If possible arrange for someone to take piggy to the vet. You can always email over details or get them to call you once she’s been seen. Is there anyone who could help you? I see you’re in TW. If I’d lived closer I would have helped.

Corn should be kept to once a week. You can also feed lettuce and coriander daily. Out of interest, do you use the vet in Paddock Wood?
