Hello,

My Guinea pig was on metacam and two antibiotics (not at the same time) for probably a couple of months recently for the lengthy treatment of a nasty abscess. Since then I have noticed that he is drinking quite a lot more. He is an older boy and I'm wondering if the medication has affected his kidneys. He is eating very well and bright and alert as normal. I will ring and book for him to see the specialist again on Monday but wondering if it is his kidneys will there be anything they can actually do if they are damaged? Many thanks

Have you checked to see if the water bottle is leaking? My boys drink more when the weather is warm. I can’t comment on metacam but hopefully someone will be along soon to advise

Thank you for replying. I think the bottle might drip a bit but my piggies are indoors so I see and hear him drinking a lot more recently bless him.

Piggies tolerate medication and at higher doses very well. We have some piggies on the forum who are metacam for life. All you can really do is speak to your vet about your individual situation
Has your piggy still been eating his veg as normal? I’m only asking because they will get a lot of water from their veggies and if the antibiotics has caused tummy upsets and piggy has had to be taken off veg then that might explain why he is drinking more water

Thank you for replying. Yes he is eating his veggies well and weight is fine. I will have a chat with the vet and see what they say. Thank you.

Drinking more was the indication my guinea pig had a kidney cysts (she drinks A LOT, a bit less than half a liter per day, and we give a lot of vegetables with a high water content on the vet's recommendation). The vet said it's very serious and if we wouldn't have come she wouldn't have lived for long anymore. We did not notice anything else, her weight was stable and she seemed very happy. She is now on medication for her issue, and she will have to take it for the rest of her life, but it has the potential to significantly lengthen her life. So even if your guinea has kidney issues, there's something that can be done! For the rest I think it's best to talk to your vet and have him/her check whether something is wrong or not.

Thanks for your reply, it was really helpful. We have a vet appointment booked so will have to see what they say. Thanks again.
