he's going in Thursday to see what the problem is and try to remove the cyst.
 
I am keeping everything crossed for you and little Bertie on Thursday. Its so damn hard when they are sick and so very heartbreaking.

Hoping that you get some positive news on Thursday.
 
Thanks, me too but I doubt it. It's going to soct a fortune and it's not exactly a no win no fee, so even if he goes when he's under, I'll have to pay... The vet said 'if we find something too nasty we may decide not to wake him.' What does he mean 'we'? Will I be consulted? It's just that even if it's too nasty, we want time to say goodbye. He's not too in pain at the mo. he's not eating well but he's eaten and drunk on his own. He's also maintained his weight-ish since yesterday... I'm just so scared... :Ayociexp118::Ayociexp119:
 
So sorry to hear he's not good, it should be up to yourself if they find something bad then they should call you and let you decide, I don't think I would be happy with my vet if he decided not to wake any of my animals with out telling me first ! can they even do this ? I'm off to receive my reiki certificate tomorrow so i will send love and healing and hope he's ok.

I am going to put it in writing that no matter what I want him woken up. He's not ready to go... he doesn't look like he knows he's sick apart from his not eating well. however, I gave him some Critical Care tonight to make sure he's got something good in his belly and he just wolfed it down... We managed 5ml last night and 8ml tonight. He's so sweet chewing on the syringe!:))
 
Maybe he's trying to get Mummy to give him more of that Critical Care that he likes so much, eh? I hope Bertie is better soon... you know how much I love him and Finlay.
 
Another 8 ml of CC this morning plus 2 Cos leaves, half a dish of celery and hay. I think he's trying to build up some strength for the op tomo...
Please keep your fingers and paws crossed for my boy, we're not ready to let go and he's not ready to go...
 
baffled... Bertie is really not behaving like a sick piggy at times and pthers he won't move.

We're still unsure if we've made the right decision about the op but one thing is sure, the growth is not going to go away... It is making us very nervous and I have enough of work and other worries (you know credit crunch and that) to keep me busy half the night...

He's had his critical care, again, 8ml, won't go past... I'm wondering whether that thing in his belly is pushing on his stomach because he doesn't seem to eat much at a time but he eats well when he does... :Ayociexp113::Ayociexp113::Ayociexp113:
 
I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and Sunny's hiding under the bed again, so hopefully that'll be the good luck charm that Bertie needs. Give him kisses and cuddles from me!

I'm so sorry to be late, I've just caught up on this thread, but want to send positive vibes to little Bertie for his op, and hugs to you. I know just how distressing this is.

Just had call from vet. Bertie had fluid in mouth and nose and they were unhappy with his chest. So I asked that he should be woken up although I could have asked that they continued with op. They then called again to say he's vomitted and it was food causing the problem, they were happy carrying on if it was OK with me but I decided that was the sign we were waiting on as we were never 100% sure about the surgery... So he's now awake and waiting for Mummy to get him. He's with Finlay so he has company and I gave them lots of food to give them.

I shall keep you posted about his progress, but all I want now is my piggy back.
 
I'm sorry the surgery didn't solve any of your questions, but I would have done the same as you if that situation had come up. Pain meds are a must and really the only way to manage the condition.
 
The vet who conducted the op agrees with that. She understood my reluctance for a 4th anestecic in 6 months (3rd in 2 weeks) and acquiesced when I said that maybe we should manage the symptoms instead of looking for the cause.
She gave me some baytril just in case so I asked for some bio-lapis.

Bertie is OK. He's been eating OK and that include CC from the dish. No need to dirty the syringe anymore... He's behaving like he usually does, eats sleeps and poops!:))

We're hopeful to leave him a week until next vet's appointment and without any major issues.
He's eaten well, drunk like a fish and been his usual cheeky cuddly self.

Good luck with him, please do keep us updated routinely on his progress. The fact that he is able to pick himself up and be normal is a great sign. All in all Charlie had just three down days during his nine months with the tumour, when I questioned whether it was his time to go etc. But since he was still eating and was still keen to potter around the floor, I felt he was just having a bad day and gave him a little extra Reiki and pain meds. I really do hope little Bertie is with you for a long time yet. xx
 
we had a good day today. weight is maintaining around 1050-1070g.
Bertie's behaviour is normal and I'm glad to see that he's drinking plenty thereby getting lots of bio-lapis into his tummy. :)
 
I would have questioned the initial diagnosis............... a "tumour" diagnosis seems to be a favourite amongst the vet.profession!
The important fact to always bear in mind is pain relief. Ibuprofen, 0.2ml by mouth is a general purpose anti-inflammatory/pain killer. Buscopan, one tablet crushed and added to water will give fast relief from pain associated with bloat.
Rimadyl, 10mg, is also safe and effective, even though it has not been licensed for use on guinea pigs.
Guinea pigs cannot vomit............enough said!
 
Anti-inflammatories should not really be used for piggies as they can cause many problems to their organs.

Rimadyl and Ibuprofen are safe for guinea pigs. There are many pigs who have been spared pain and discomfort by the use of these drugs. Guinea pigs are tolerant of Rimadyl and in some cases it may need to be used, at the appropriate dose, for upto 28 days. Many veterinary drugs are not specific species approved because of the cost of research/testing for what is often a minority interest.
 
I have no reason to doubt what my vet said. She was, like me, very surprised at the reflux, but as this cleared the problem with the anesthetics, I'm just glad whatever happened did (real vomit or not) so I could get my piggy back.

As for drugs, again, i'll follow the professional advice I'll be given. As a professional, I hate people telling me how to do my job when they clearly haven't got a clue. Ibuprofen is a great drug, very effective, but there must be a reason why pregnant woman and asthmatics can't take it. So I just won't risk it.

Anyway, thanks for all the advice, but at the end of the day, I'll be making the decision of what goes down my bertie's neck.
