dry skin?

hi
my piggie peony is scratching a lot, and i looked at her hair and scalp. she squealed when i looked at her scalp, and it looked quite dry to me. there are also little white dots in her hair, they're not lice, cos i know they move. what should i do? i bath them all about once a month, as recommended by gorgeous guineas and i use the lavander and lemon tee tree one on her.
any help would be good O0
 
She probably has mites so a vet visit is called for.Ivermectin is the only product at the moment that will effectively get rid of mites.There is no longer any need to give painfull injections of this as it is now available in topical form(Zeno 450).If your vet prescribes the oral version,this is o.k. as well.

I do not personally beleive in bathing piggies routinely,certainly not as often as 4 weekly.This is just my own opinion and I know other members do bathe their piggies frequently.
 
I think bathing too often cant be that good either really :-\ I do mine when necessary and no more and I also use GG melts and shampoos. It could also be fungal, the white stuff you describe is like scurf. Try gently tugging the hair and see if it comes away easily in the places that are affected. If it does, more likely to be fungal as with mites, hair doesnt come away :) A coco neem melt will help in any case but not within 48 hours if you do treat for mites!
 
:) I would stop bathing her and contact Chrissie. Alavender Melt helps to condition piggies that are prone to dry skin. Ivermectin can dry the skin too but must be used if you think its mites. I use it on day one and day ten, orally.

Mine are bathed 6 wheekly. Scarlett who has dry skin has a Lavender Melt, she used to have the Lavender oil soak monthly but I can do a Melt every 4 months or so and the skin stays clean of scurf.
 
thanks, it's more like 6 wheekly really. :) with mites, doesn't the hair have bald patches? i'll e-mail chrissie O0
 
Good idea to email Chrissie :) The hair goes bald from biting and scratching the area with mites, as with fungal too I think but Chrissie always gives good advice O0
 
With mites you often get broken off hairs that looks like thinning hair and not necessarily bald, but if you're unsure I would treat for both.
 
i've e-mailed chrissie, but no reply yet O0 there is no thinning of the hair or broken hairs, no bald spots or anything, i think it may be just dry skin, but i'm sure chrissie will say if i need to see a vet O0
 
Sounds like a Lavendar/CocoNeem Melt would help if its not mites then but best to check :)
 
Hi one of my little ones has a little dot of dry skin, do you think aloe vera gel will be ok for him
 
Is it only one spot and is there any dandruff?.There is a possibility that it is mites.Where is the dry spot?
