Dudley has just turned 2. He stopped eating yesterday. I took the day off work and got him to Taverham Vets today.

They suspected dental. They thought his back bottom teeth were crossing over. The plan was to burr the teeth down

He had a general anaesthetic but the outcome wasn't good. He had an xray. The x ray showed that there was a mass under his jaw which was infection. His jaw showed several fractures which seems to be from the pressure on the way his teeth has grown. The vet said his jaw was so loose and she could almost feel it crumbling away.

They said they could treat with antibiotics and try and take the teeth down but inevitably his jaw wouldn't heal.

The vet said the best decision was to have he put to sleep. I am full of guilt. How I could possible miss the signs

I am so very sorry to read this.
What a gorgeous boy.
Remember that guinea pigs are very good at hiding signs of illness and you did get him to the vet as soon as you noticed anything wrong.
Please don’t beat yourself up but be gentle and kind to yourself as you grieve

I agree though - you took action as soon as you saw a problem. Don’t blame yourself.

Please don’t feel guilty, you did everything you could have done, dental problems with piggies can come on very quickly and they hide their illnesses so well

It is the what ifs. What If they did file his teeth down? He has been okay for 2 years if you get me

What if? is a normal part of grief and the shock.
Sadly there are not always answers and we have to work through the grief.
It takes time.

Dudley was beautiful and you going to miss him but don't beat yourself up. He was a powerful piggie to eat with all that badness

I’m so very sorry. You’ve had an awful lot to deal with and you have been called upon to make the most heartbreaking decision unexpectedly today. Please don’t doubt yourself or any decisions you have made. One vet once told me that piggies were masters at masking their conditions and adapting until they were no longer able to cope and that the difference between them coping and not coping could be as little as 1%.
When you saw a problem you took Dudley to the vet. What they found was unexpected and a shock for you. You didn’t really have time to come to terms with any of it before being called to make that decision. But you did it on the advice of the vet who was the expert. Big hugs to you xx
 
Thank you for you kind words. It is hard because the vet literally called as he was under. The decision Had to be made so quickly.

He lived with his friend Harry in a 8x2 c and c. It was divided down the middle as they didn't get on sharing the same space. They would lay together side by side though xx

please don’t blame yourself. I lost my Enoch to dental issues. He was only just over 2 years old. I didn’t realise there was anything wrong either until he stopped eating xx
