I've finally ordered some! My OH's away so he cant tell me off for spending £23 on two bales of hay... I wonder if they'll fit in my flat?

I got some great dust free hay from a petshop near me - it's Devon hay and the piggies love it. Def a huge improvement on the hay I've had from P@H

i recieved it today, it smells lovely, it looks lovely...but its damn expensive! £23 for the same smount you could get from a pet shop for £6approx. OK if you're a lottery winner!

That is interesting about P@H Hay. I am a total novice GP owner, but thought it was rubbish hay! Its full of hard sticks in amongst the hay, lots of dust, AND I found a shredded up piece of shiny orange string in their bedroom compartment. Now, we don't have orange string. They are v. young babies and havent been anywhere. I can only think the piece of string was in the hay!

OH wants me to buy a bale of hay, used for horses, from some farm shops round here. Trouble is, how do I house it and keep it from being damp? Is that sort of hay suitable?

Any recommendations for hay grateefully received.

Also, what about the contraversial debate on Wood shavings or not wood shavings. I'm using them but don't know which advise to go by.

Many thanks
Mrs T

that kind of hay would be perfect, you could store it in a large wicker bascket so it could breath perhaps?
i use woodshavings, but its a bit controversial, so i'd maybe see if that horse supplier supplied megazorb as apparently thats good cprbmm x

Megazorb is a great alternative. You can get that from a horse feed shop. Google Northern Crop Driers and they have stockists. I'm thinking of changing mine over to megazorb for the winter. I just can't have the pigs indoors on fleece as the dander doesnt hold so well on fleece.

Claire I couldn't justify £23 for hay. My hay is the tough stuff, costs £1.70 a bag and lasts 2 full days. Its huge, shop around smaller pet shops that don't sell animals you'll be amazed at what you find. :)

I tried it after Christmas, I think the more you buy the cheaper it becomes but its storing the stuff. :) Its great stuff its just not cheap.

Mrs. T :
I have mine all on woodshavings (dustfree) and they are all fine, haven't had a problem with that.

The big hay bales you have to keep off the ground and covered lightly with cloth and not plastic or tarp (it sweats underneath).

I use an old doona cover to keep my hay in and store it on an old crate and we haven't had any rodent problems or damp problems with that.

Hope that helps!

Interesting reading.

Trouble with the big bales, is I am extremely scared of mice (I know, I know). This is a great leap forward for me to have Guinea Pigs as they are really part of the rodent family. Don't throw eggs at me please, but I started to faint in P@H when I saw the 'other' rodents, including the hamsters, which I told my daughter I thought I liked. It was very embarassing.

I'm being brave with the GP's and find them very cute and fun. It does help that they don't have a long tail.

Apologies for my pathetic phobia, but it is so severe that neighbours from far away have come running upon hearing me scream, thinking my family were being murdered (instead the cat brought a live one in the house) and getting very cross with me when they found out the cause.

I want to make sure the GP's get the best life ever. They are not mine, but my daughter's, but I'm 'helping' until she has got it all under control.

To be honest the dust free hay bales aren't massive they are just regular size and you won't find mice in them. :) Well not that I have heard anyway. :)

I really feel guinea pigs need re-classification as the have no tail so don't come across as rodent like to me. I've no problems with rodents, I do have some issues with birds and fish but I'm getting over it. :))

Claire How come you spent 23 on two bales. I spend 29 on 5 bales?

I think its good if you only have a small amount of piggies. Mine are also alergic to the dust you get in regular pet shops. I have tried all the "dust extracted hay" - people get this mixed with the dust free and there is a big difference in this.

I hope your piggies i liking it, i wouldnt get any other hay, it smells so lovely and they love it better than any other stuff ive ever had. a bale for me and two piggies lasts well over a month, so i dont think its bad on the price but can understand if you have more it can get expensive.

I use carefresh also in the places they wee in, esp their litter tray and they put the hay in here and i have pro fleece so only have little places where the hay is, so hence not loads being used.

Hope your piggies love it Claire! like i said, i wouldnt change it for anything else!

I'm confused to hehe but it doesn't take much. You can get a massive bale for £25. The ones I got where regular size and cost £15.99 for 2 I'm sure but it was in February and obviously prices have gone up recently.

Lol Lou - i can only have the bales, so i get the 5 bales for 29.99 (five Pack Mix).

I think Claire has got the American Timothy Hay as thats £23 for two.

You can get 10 bales for 40 pound but have no room for storage.

A large bale, the big ones is £26 pounds
