At the mo I’ve got a disastrously dusty bale of hay which is covered in a bright yellow dust, so for the past few weeks I’ve been beating the hell out of it outside, shaking it all over and getting off as much yellow as possible before bringing it indoors for my rodents. My sleeves turn yellow, my hands get filthy and I have to wash my face afterwards – it’s that bad.

So anyway my mother got talking to her horsey friend about it and she said something interesting and that I should be careful cos I may contract ‘farmers lung’ which can be deadly!

I’d never heard of it before but I’ve been doing some googling and it does sound hazardous…. http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/farmers_lung.html . Thought I’d put a warning here for other people cos I’m sure others shake dust off their bales too and are completely unaware there could be an effect to their health long-term. Think I’m gonna nick a breathing mask from work for my weekly half hour shake about outside now.

Oh and my mum’s horsey friend gave some advice, she said to put hay into a fabric holey bag and soak it in water and leave it out to dry and the dangerous dust should drip off. Doesn’t sound very practical to me but it’s a thought.

Oh and here’s my dodgy bale if anyone wants a peek to see what my yellow dust looks like. (Look hard at the green bag.)

Dunno what it is, I googled that last month but only found one other person who’s discussed yellow dust in hay online.
