Hi. I came home from work at at about 23.50 to find my boyfriends guinea pig lying on it’s side in its cage. I thought he was dead and phoned my boyfriend to let him know but he then started moving.
I have brought him out his cage and have been cuddling him since. But that was 2 and a half hours ago.
I have come home to find his two other guinea pigs have passed away in the last few months. The first one was already dead when I got home. The second one very quickly went downhill and passed away after about 45 mins.
Should I be concerned at how long it’s taking? Is there anything else I can do? Yeah

@Weedelly You can take him to the emergency vet. He may not be dying, but be in need of vet attention. Or the vet can help him pass quickly and pain free.

How old are your pigs, @Weedelly ? I'm asking because this reminds me of a thread from some time back, where someone lost several young pigs for no obvious reason over the a short space of time. It turned out that their house had a gas boiler that was in need of maintenance, and the piggies had succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning. Being small, it affected them far quicker than it would have affected humans.

So sorry for the sudden loss of your boyfriends piggies x That’s a very worrying situation if it’s cafbon monoxide poisoning? I wonder if you could get an engineer out to check the boiler and get an alarm x

Hi. Update: He passed away between 4 and 5am that morning 😢
They would have been 5 in March, so a decent age
I guess.
We moved in together at the end of June into a rented property. A month or so ago we did smell gas outside but havnt smelt anything since and we do have carbon monoxide detectors in the house.
Alfie passed away at the beginning of October then hedwig last month and mason the other night. Alfie showed no signs of ill health at all beforehand and came as quite a shock. Not long before Alfie passed We noticed hedwig had an impaction and a couple of days later lost a patch of fur so we took him to the vet and was given flea/mite treatment for all 3 Guineas and they all seemed fine hedwigs fur grew back quickly. Then when hedwig passed away it had been 5/6 weeks since his missing fur so again came as a shock. Then mason we were kind of expecting him to go with him being the last one. He had an eye infection at the same time as hedwig with the missing patch of fur. The three of them were very close and would play and cuddle with each other etc.
But all three were perfectly fine before it happening eating and drinking and running about in the hours leading up to it.
I also have two Guineas but although they are in the same room as my boyfriends they are in a separate cage. Mine will also be 5 in January.
So not sure what’s caused it 🤷‍♀️

Since you moved, has your boyfriend changed anything about their cage? e.g changed bedding or diet? Is your guinea pigs and your boyfriends using the same brands?

I am so sorry for your loss.

Sleep well little one
