Hi all,
I don't post too often but I do lurk quite a bit just to see what's going on. I have a question about ear cleaning. Does anyone do this and how do you do it? I've noticed my peruvian Louie has a lot of excess wax on and in his ears, there are definately no mites and none of the other 5 boys have any real visible wax. I checked guinea lynx and they recommend cleaning once a week but they don't say how.

Thanks
Fay

Hi Fay,

I use Otodex Veterinary Ear Drops (for cats and dogs) to help. 2-3 drops massaged into each ear, left for 24 hours and clean the visible areas of the ears with cotton buds. I also repeat for another day if the ears are particularly mucky. Some pigs accept it, some pigs put up a huge fuss and won't stop shaking their heads.

I clean their ears every time I bathe them, so once every 2-3 months.

Thanks for that, will I be able to pick that up in a decent pet shop? The one I usually go to carries ivomec drops and things like that so hopefully they should have some. Thanks again and I'm sure Louie will be extremely pleased at me cleaning his ears. ;) He's normally pretty placid and just accepts his bath so fingers crossed. Thanks again.

One of mine, Georgie, always gets mucky ears, the wax seems to bulid up quite quickly. What I do is use Otodex as Laura said but I check/clean his ears once a week and he usually needs the drops for a couple of days once the month. It loosens the wax and it is easily removed. On the outer ear I use olive oil and a little cotton wool to clean,
