This morning i noticed Holly my elderly pig had lots of shavings stuck to her feet. she seemed aggitated so i picked some off and the skin was not in good shape> So this eve when i was doing health checks i saw crusted (maybe bloody) discg=harge on one of her ears. I currrently am about to try clear it up t get a better look at skin beneath. it looks as if there has been alot of dscharge. Can anyone help? pics soon

Please see a vet tomorrow as soon as you can! I would recommend to keep her on soft towels or fleece for the time being and to gently disinfect her feet with saline solution, either from the pharmacy or making it yourself by mixing 1 teaspoon of salt into 1 pint of boiled, cooled water.

Okay I'm going to get an appointment for tomorrow
And do you reccomend separating her from the other pigs? They havent had checks yet but i will find out.

Is cleaning it a good idea?

I would clean her feet and just gently dab her ears, but I would not do anything more as long as you haven't got an idea of what it is. It can be an ear infection or an infestation of ear mites, but it needs to be diagnosed and appropriately treated by a vet. Have a look at the others first.

Oh ok sorry. I have had no experience of ear complaints before. I was also trying to check her over and dab things up as i typed that! The other pigs are fine so I am keeping Holly inside overnight until I get a diagnosis by the vet in the morning hopefully. Thank you so much for your help!

I wish your poorly girl and you all the best for tomorrow!

Thank you! She doesn't seem to be in pain and is happily munching and pooping as usual. Fingers crossed the vet will be able to sort her poor wee ear out! I think her feet just needed a bit of a clean and moisturise! She quite often gets a bit dirty from being on the grass etc.

Holly just back from vets with ear infection and ear drops to go in twice daily.

Best of luck! Please contact your vet asap if you notice a head tilt in case the outer ear infection you are treating for is working its way further in. The sooner that is treated with an antibiotic, the better.

Ear drops are CANAURAL dog and cat drops. Contains Diethanolamine fusidate 5.0 mg, Framycetin sulphate 5.0 mg, Nystatin 1000,000 I.U. , Prednisolone 2.5 mg per 1g suspension.

@Abi_nurse

Ear drops for an outer ear infection should be OK.

Yeah the vet said come back if she gets any worse or doesn't seem to clear up and she will give an oral antibiotic. There is an active infection in one ear and its starting in the other ear :.( She isn't displaying any signs of balance impairment so all is good atm!
