treacletoffee

Hi,

we have had treacle and toffee for just over a year, they are loved and cared for neutered brothers from the animal sanctuary.

Treacle is larger and dominant, but the two always have got on well with each other. Last night we noticed toffee's ear had a chunk out and was bleeding. We bathed the ear and seperated them overnight. It scabbed over nicely overnight but when we put them together, Treacle went for Toffee's ear and it started bleeding again. But there didn't seem to be obvious aggression between the two more a kind of nibbling.

I know ear-nibbling can be normal dominance behaviour, but is this a bit extreme ? And any ideas about what to do ? They like each others company, and we don't want them to be lonely, but I don't want to see this harm either.

Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear you have such concerns about your boys.

I can understand your uncertaintly about whether to separate them or not. A compromise, until Toffee's ear has healed sufficiently, is to put them in a divided cage - so they can see/hear/smell each other but not get to each other, thus allowing their friendship a chance at survivial while allowing time for Toffee's ear to heal.

A number of my own piggies do lick/nibble each others ears, luckily no injuries from it though. They also like to lick each others eyes!
