Hi, all. I have a question about our girl, Lucy. She's always eaten more slowly than her sister. It doesn't seem like she struggles to eat and it's not that she doesn't eat, it just takes her longer. Because of this, we took to separating her during veggie time to make sure her sister didn't eat everything before Lucy got a chance.

Last night, it took Lucy even longer to eat. Again, she didn't seem to struggle with it or have any difficulty. We also see her eat plenty of hay throughout the day. But she seemed to give up on the leaf of lettuce she was eating. However, when my husband put her back in the cage, he said the second she was with the other three again, she went up to greet all of them before continuing to eat the leaf (though she had to keep it away from the others).

Everything else about her seems fine. My husband thinks it's just because she doesn't like to be alone. What do you all think?

So you wouldn't say this is a change in behavior? She has always ate this speed?

Is there any sign of over chewing? If you feed a sprig of coriander stalk first does it go in all fine, no over chewing at the leaf part?

Yeah, it's definitely not a change. It's just that last night was particularly slow, although it's possible she had just had some hay or something like that and simply wasn't hungry. I haven't seen any over-chewing, but I also don't have a coriander sprig handy. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks. :)

Personally I wouldn't separate as it doesn't sound necessary. Perhaps she just didn't like being away from the others? My late Peter used to make veggie time last a good hour or two before he was neutered. That soon changed when he was in the girls as he realised if he wanted to have his spread he'd have to be a bit quicker about it :))

So do you think she'll start eating more quickly if she realizes she has to compete for it?

Most probably. I have 5 piggies and as soon as the veggies go in they all fall on it. Sometimes Meg is upstairs (up ramp?) and gets so excited about the veg being downstairs (always served downstairs) that she can't find her way to the ramp and I have to physically lift her down so she can get to the veg silly piggy!
