Eating Newspaper!

I've noticed since I've had my pigs in the living room with me that they have started to eat the newspaper that lines the bottom of their cage.

They are fed twice a day with Wagg crunch, and a huge variety of fruit and veg (lots more variety since I've been on here!), unlimited hay and GrazeOn dried grass twice a day. I would have thought that was everything they needed, so why are they choosing to eat the paper? Are they lacking in something nutritional? I've bought them mineral licks etc. just in case but doesn't seem to make any difference to the paper eating.

Any ideas? Is it doing them any harm - should I use something else? They currently have newspaper on the bottom, then Megazorb then lots of hay.

Eccles loves it as 2 the two babes so I don't use it and use towels underneath the fleece. I do that for them all now, the Liverpool Echo isn't worth eating! :D
 
can eating newspaper damage guinea pigs, mine do it a lot i thought i was normal as friends of mine theres do it too
 
I have a sow who starts eating the newspaper before i've layed it properly! And she has no ill effects from munching The Sun!
 
mine love eating, pooping and weeing on the sun, which makes my nan very proud (shes from liverpool and liverpool fan) ;D

and the ink from UK newspapers doesnt harm them :)

Unfortunatly for some reason they are have a liking for black bin liners! If I'm sat in the shed cleaning them out they'll come and nibble the bag or if they are in the house and spot one on the floor they'll try to have a nibble. I haven't a clue why and now have to make sure I keep all black bags out of reach!

Why do piggies have to try to eat things they are not meant to eat?!?
 
mine used to do this, i haven't noticed any problems O0 I now put in willow balls stuffed with things and lots of different hays and they seem to prefer them ;) But at floor time if there's anything in-edible out they'll go for that! ::) so again i just put out treats and hays and toys, it doesn't stop them though! ::) I just have to remove in-edible stuff and keep a very close eye on them! :police:
I like to anyway, it's so fun watching them :smitten: plus they have a fetish for climbing the stairs, which is ok, until they get to the top and help themselves to upstairs! ::) ;D
 
yes mine like eating newspapers. It seems to be a habit that other ones copy - if one starts they all do it >:D
 
I had to change my bedding from sawdust and hay to vetbed as one of gp's ate the sawdust! 98)
 
Mine have discovered the newspaper under the vetbed. They have to lift the vetbed at the edges - no easy matter - to reach the newspaper which they then rip up & eat!

Some of my out door piggies only eat newspaper if they think they haven't had enough fresh veggies!
