Eco-friendly alternative to puppy pads?

Hi all!

My piggies are in a C&C cage with puppy pads as a base and padded fleece on top.

I don't like having to replace the puppy pads so often - it feels such a shame to throw away so much plastic which won't decompose.

I can't find any biodegradable puppy pads. There are "eco" ones but all that means is the way they're made is more eco-friendly, but they are still not biodegradable.

Is there an alternative base I can use?

Thanks

Washable puppy pads are available - a couple of makes are mentioned in this thread Washable pads
I currently use fleece liners but the inner bit has shrunk so they aren't flat any more, so I'm thinking of using washable puppy pads too instead.

Towels are what I use on the bottom of my fleece. After 2-3 days the aroma will be in the air so you will have to wash often. Not sure if you have any old towels? My grandmom repaints her bathrooms every fee years and buys all new towels to match so I get the old colors for my boys 😂

I've just discovered softshell backed fleece and found that pee doesn't even soak through to the newspaper I put underneath it. I got a few strips from eBay ( search softshell fleece and then in the craft and then fabrics category) and regret buying vet bed which is rubbish in comparison.
I'm thinking of buying more as it's thin so doesn't take up much room in the washing machine or storage. Just looked now and there's strips 50x148cm for £7.99 each.

Old towels are a good alternative to puppy pads. Personally, I use these kavee fleece liners and place it directly on my base. I use pee pads on top for areas my piggies use most for added absorbency then place everything in the same wash. 👍

I'm using puppy pads at the moment so I can have large hay areas without getting it on the fleece, but when I had my fleece cage liners with absorbent core laid out fully in the c and c cage, (the ones with megazorb? core) then there was no need for anything absorbent underneath them. I'd use pee pads and fleece hideys which I'd change quite often, then every few days wash the cage liner.
