Ecoli Warning

Just seen something about 2 ecoli related deaths in the uk and 150 people ill. People are being reminded to wash bagged salad and rocket leaves. I'm not sure if piggies can catch ecoli as well but better safe than sorry!
 
I stand to be corrected here, but I think that as guinea pigs eat their special poops, which are full of E. coli, it's not such an issue for them. Us humans, however....big problem, especially for children, the elderly and anyone with an underlying medical condition. Wash that salad! :tu:
 
Oh dear, I had E-Coli as a baby, don't want it again. Best get washing my spinach.
 
Of course no harm in double washing, but salad marked as 'washed and ready to eat' is fine (this is confirmed in the article)
 
Its funny because i heard this on the news.. The day before, i gave fudge and poppet their leafs with their evening veg. I plonked fudge down infront of her plate, she sniffed the veg and immediately screwed her face up then looked at me. I first thought "oh dear, shes sick!". I shook the veg about, she done the same thing again. She then started moving the veg with her foot (I'm thinking what the hell is she doing!) and seperated a bit of pepper which she ate, she then done the same again and was eating everything else. I took all the leaves off her plate, and she immediately got stuck in to everything else. I offered her the leaves at the end, and she was still disgusted by them; when she usually eats them first. They werent wilted and smelled fine to me, but there was obviously something wrong with them! I quickly took poppets away from her; and funnily enough she hadnt touched hers either.

I wonder if it was a dodgy bag..
 
Is this all vegetables?
My lot eat green beans, cucumber, lettuce, peppers, coriander and celery. I just want to make sure.

Think its mixed salad bags, and something about rocket being the cause if i remember right x
 
My boar had an e. coli infection 6 months ago. Some strains are harmless and abundant in their intestines, while others can be lethal. As a rule of thumb, the strains pathogenic to humans are also pathogenic to pigs.

I always wash, soak and then wash again all leaf vegetables, and wash and peel the others. However, some bacterial strains are water-resistant, so no amount of washing can get rid of them. Soaking in 4 parts water 1 part vinegar may help.
