"Get guinea pigs" they said. "It'll be fun" they said!

This is my 5th month of owning guinea pigs and after an unexpected pregnancy, a pregnancy watch and multiple fall outs I thought it was time to finally enjoy my piggies..

Edna is off to the vets Thursday as she is not right. It's the soonest I can get and also the soonest I am free.

Her eating habits have changed and she's spending a lot of time in her cube hidey. She's been acting strange since her fault out with Eileen. Last couple of days I noticed she wasn't finishing her pellets and today she didn't get out of bed for her morning veggies. She is also pooping a lot less and after mentioning this on another thread I was advised to start syringe feeding and keep a close eye on her and get her to the vets quicker if needed.

I will weigh her tomorrow morning and see if her weight has changed.

Don't know how much more of this I can deal with!

HUGS

I am very sorry that you have so much trouble.

Please start syringe feeding and watering Edna NOW, as much as she will take to keep the guts going. Please be aware that the poo output reflects the food intake from a day or two before, so Edna hasn't been eating fully for a while now! Don't wait until tomorrow or until she runs out of steam and is in danger of going into gut stasis.
Switch from weighing weekly to weighing to weighing daily at the same time as soon as your notice any changes in wellbeing and food intake. Over 80% of the daily food intake is hay, and you cannot control this otherwise!

So sorry to hear about Edna. They always pick their timings don't they?! Just as you relax a bit. Hope the vet gets to the bottom of this for you

Goodness me. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end. You must be an expert guinea pig carer and fleece item maker by now.

Best of luck to Edna on thursday and to you.

Sending you hugs. Having had a run of problems myself recently I know how you feel. Hope things get better for you soon, the good times with piggys really are worth the trials, it just doesn't seem like it at the time.

So sorry to hear your going through yet another traumatic time.
Do you think she’s in pain from her fallout at all?
It’s hard to figure what has gone wrong but looks as if it is related in some way? Either pain somewhere or she’s really traumatised from the fallout.
Just hope the syringe feeding gets her gut going a bit better until you can get a vets appt. Sending love to you all. Xx

Sending you lots of healing vibes. We are here to support you in any way we can xx

Hugs and healing vibes all round! I can totally empathise after my run of bad luck and illnesses over the last few weeks. Just when things are looking up, along comes that sinking feeling.. fingers crossed for a simple fix for Edna :(

I’m so sorry that you have had such a raw deal with piggies. I’d start syringe feeding now to make sure she is getting sufficient nutrition and to keep her guts moving until you can get her checked out by the vet on Thursday. Hugs

Sorry to hear this, you are really going through the ringer with your lot :( Well done for spotting whatever it is so quickly and please let us know how she gets on at the vets, sending lots of healing vibes x

Oh you poor thing, you're going through a lot :( I'm sure she'll be fine, is she on her own since the fall out? It could just be she's lonely?

If she is poorly I'm sure it's something simple like a urine infection or something, you can join me in the poorly pig club. We were going to have jackets but since vet bills we can't afford them. We also don't have cookies :))

Big hugs xx

Thank you everyone. I've been in tears with this. I've started syringe feeds.

Just weighed her and she's dropped 70g this week which now has me really worried. I'm going to ring the vets first thing tomorrow and get her seen ASAP.

Will keep you up to date.

Oh no! I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I do hope the vet can sort it. I wonder whether the illness caused the fallout?

Keep strong, we are all routing for you and her xx

I wish I knew. She doesn't want any pigs near her. Even if she see's them through the bars she starts chattering her teeth and running around all stressed out which is why I put her in the top cage away from the others. Eileen still like the interaction with the others between the bars and seems to be much more settled despite being on her own. Hopefully the vet will have answers.

Yes, she's on her own but being near the others just stresses her so I really don't know what's going on in her head.

I just want her well and happy.

I've emptied the Christmas fund. Everyone is getting lump of coal this year!

Maybe she is depressed from being on her own? The stress of the fallout could of caused an underlying illness to flare up. Have you checked her teeth and mouth for any possible reasons she may not be eating? Is it possible she has a cut or abcess anywhere from fighting that is causing her any pain? Hopefully it is nothing serious and as long as you keep syringe feeding her often until you get her to the vets I'm sure she will be okay xx

Aw I hope she's okay. I know the feeling, that's all we want!

Christmas? What's that? :))

First thing I did when I noticed the decreased appetite was to check her mouth and teeth. I do it regularly anyway and also checked straight after the fight with Eileen and thankfully all looks perfectly normal. Outwardly she looks fine so I'm worried it's something I can't see.

Poor little Edna. Hugs for you both and healing vibes sent.

It could possibly be a problem with the back teeth that you can't see. Hopefully the vet gets to the bottom of it and she's feeling better soon!

Oh honey! So sorry you’re going though this :soz: Massive hugs! xx

I'm sorry you are having a difficult time .i hope the vet can put some light on Ednas behaviour.take time out for yourself.x

I wonder if she is lonely, it's not the same having a piggy in another part of the cage. She want to do zoomies & popcorn with a friend & play chase. Let's us know how the vets visit goes. :luv:

@Eileen's Mum - don't lose heart.

For the first few months of having Binky and Errol, we had nothing but trouble. Binky was so poorly we were at the vets at least once a week, syringe feeding daily, syringing medicine and he was on (and still is) a nebuliser for his lungs.
After a few months of just hard slog, fighting Binky several times a day because he didn't want his medicine etc, I can finally say it was worth it.

There were days and even weeks at a time where I thought I couldn't do this any longer and why on earth am I putting this financial and emotional pressure on myself.
But the amount of joy the boys have given in the past few months makes up for the hell we all went through, tenfold at least!

I'm not afraid to admit that at times I did resent Binky. Why couldn't he be healthy and problem free like Errol? Owning a pet was supposed to be fun and relaxing, not all this hard work.
But I found the key to dealing with these emotions was to interact with Binky more.

Instead of just feeding and medicating, so the only time I'd pick him up was when I was trying to shove a syringe down his throat, I began picking him and Errol up as often as possible.
I'd sit with them on my knee as much as I could, both of them together and sometimes individually.
That's when I discovered that Binky adores Supervet. It is the only thing that will make him sit still for an hour or more (unless he's asleep!) and so we really bonded over some telly!

Finding that one thing that brought an hour of peace on the household really made a massive difference. Don't give up, hunt for that one thing that makes everyone relax. Maybe it's TV, radio etc, maybe it's being brushed of having teatree cream massaged into their feet (Errol enjoys that!).

And above all, don't feel guilty. You are going above and beyond to do your best for these piggies, and it's totally natural to feel overwhelmed or annoyed or frustrated. You will overcome all of this and so will your piggies.

Stay strong. It will be worth it <3

So sorry to hear that you have to deal with this on top of everything else. I suspect that the fall out was because Edna wasn't feeling too good. She wants to be alone at the moment but when she is recovered she may bond again.
It will get better. You are due a good run! Xx
