I have been moaning for a while to the BF about him getting me correx for my hay loft and he has just called, his work mate is making me one as we speak but he is using wood, they are bringing it home tonight! :<>

Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease fit! :...:(|)

There will be some very disappointed piggies if it doesn't! :o:(|)

lovelygirl, your avatar is so funny! Everytime I see it I think of the 'feed me' caption! :(|):(|):(|):(|)

I don't want to build (pardon the pun ;) ) my hopes too high, his friend is so good at this kind of thing, I don't doubt it will look good, it is just whether my measurements have come up to scratch! :...

My BF said it is looking really good and he has put a lot of effort in, he has even hinged the ramp so I can adjust the height and it makes for easier cleaning. 8;)

This lad really is a perfectionist so it will be worth the wait. He could start a business on here! :(|)

Sounds like it will be fab. I would have thought plywood will be ok in terms of safety as it's smooth- just check regularly for any chewed bits. However, you might need to give some thought to waterproofing. My first thought would be to cover it (inside base and up the sides) in overlapping strips of gaffer tape which is pretty much waterproof- I used it to mend a hole in my tent at Glastonbury one year and it didn't let the rain in. You can wipe it over and when it needs replacing, you should be able to peel it off carefully.
Someone else might have a better idea.

Ah, shame it's not finished, so curious to see how he's done it! I don't have any further suggestions for keeping it dry, just that I normally dry all the wood houses and any other soggy stuff in front of the heater, or in the sun in the summer. This kills most of the bacteria and prevents the wood rotting if you do it regularly.

Thank you for your suggestions! I have spray for hutches too so I can use that and put it in front of the radiator. :)

I was thinking of maybe putting a puppy pad in the base and covering it in fleece, firstly to keep it fresher but also to stop the inevitable chewing. They won't get splinters in their mouths will they? :(

The tape thing is a good idea though. :)

He is even putting little steps on the ramp to help them get up. :)

It's a bit difficult to know without seeing it. Plywood is made by gluing together thin layers of wood- could be soft or hardwood. And the type of adhesive varies according to what you use it for. (My dad used to have a diy shop). I don't think it will splinter particularly easily but ideally you don't want them chewing it. Put a photo up when you get it then we might have some better ideas- it depends a bit on where the chewable edges are.

Thanks. :)

I am slightly worried about the wood thing but they said the plastic would have been more harmful with being sharp. I need something to cover the edges. :(

What about lino? You could tape the edges to the sides of the new level. Line should be pretty cheap for all you will need, and its very easy to work with.

I could give that a go! Why do they have to be so naughty? Why can't they just enjoy their homes without eating them?! :0:(|)

What about the ramp? I know they will want to eat that! I can imagine Hoggle eating it away while Ludo is asleep upstairs then he can't get down! :o:(|)

Oooh, yes- fablon. I'd forgotten about that. It's good stuff, we used to sell it off the roll. People used to use it to cover worktops and in dolls houses. You just need to take your time so that you don't get any wrinkles but it should do the trick, no problem.

Well they will be perfect at that because they do signs which involve stickering up vehicles so they are good at not leaving bubbles!

He even said he might put their names on it somehow! :o:(|)
