Hi, my guineapig (nearly 7 yrs old) has a runny nose in one nostril and has done for well over a month. He has overgrown back teeth, as you can read in my previous post. I took him to the vet 3 weeks ago who basically said he hasn't got long to live (2 months would be lucky) and just to nurse him until he did. However I don't want to do that, when his teeth get really bad I'm going to risk the GA to give him a chance. Since then he's put on 225g and is, touch wood, quite bright, apart from having a runny nose in one nostril and of course still overgrown back teeth but is eating ok. I did point this out to the vet 3 weeks ago but she pretty much dismissed it. I have already given him a full course of baytil for it and this hasn't cleared it up (my other guineapig died about 2 months ago of pneumonia so had it left over). My question is what do they usually give guineapigs to clear it up? As baytril didn't seem to work. Also it's only in one nostril and his eyes are ok, surely if it was an upper respiratory infection it would be in both nostrils?

What colour is the stuff coming out of his nose? Also is it a constant drip or is his nose just a bit wet?

Is the vet pig savvy?

From how I've read it the vet has done nothing for his teeth? If so how have you got him to put on all that weight because it's alot for a pig that has bad teeth.

I really think a second opinion is needed here. There are some good vets who wouldn't knock a pig out fully to do the teeth if it's just a case of rasping spurs in an elderly pig.

The vet hasn't done anything.

I've fed him on critical care as well as him eating for himself. I then decreased the amount of critical care I'm feeding him and at moment he doesn't require any as he's eating enough for jimself, touch wood. He can eat grass fine but struggles with solid foods a bit more but hasn't got to the stage where he can't eat.

His nose has mucus coming out of his nostril, sometimes clear, sometimes a little yellowy, but only out of one nostril and he's otherwise quite bright still, touch wood. Sometimes it's worse than others, it's not dripping out but often I need to wipe it.

I think I'm going to take him back and see another vet. The vet I saw was a very experienced vet adn presumably with cavies as she's seen our guineapigs for decades. I'm scared of him getting it done without a GA as he is quite wriggly and Id on't want him dying of stress. I've seen a video of it being done without GA and I not sure he could cope with it, as I mentioned in previous post.
