My partner and I quit smoking today and are both using electronic cigarettes. I had no idea until I just researched it that the exhalation of ecigs produce a small amount of nicotine and other toxins. We have been using the ecigs in the same room as the guinea pigs all day today and now I feel so bad. I genuinely thought that only vapour was exhaled. I will not continue to use ecigs in the house (never smoked tobacco cigs in the house) but now I'm worrying I could have damaged their health by exposing them to ecigarettes all day?

Does anyone know anything about ecigs? And whether I could have harmed their long term health by using them around my pigs today?

Hi there, I did some research for work recently because of the increased amount of people using them around others, so after a little work, we made it company policy to also ban staff using them in the offices, the reason being, as you've pointed out, it does contain a small amount of nicotine and obviously vapour. The British Medical Council, going from memory here, are only now starting to put pressure on about the use of ecigs around humans because frankly it's not known how much is getting absorbed from those in the vicinity. I suspect i will only be a matter of time before they are eventually banned also from public area's, how long I don't know because, lets face it, the tobacco industry did a really good job of hiding the actual harmful resulting from smoking tobacco, let alone bystanders.

So, you're probably not going to like me saying this, but I'd be inclined to say, no usage in front of the kiddies (piggies) i.e. in another room. With indoor piggies, we're are able to move rooms if we are hot/cold/need fresh air or anything whereas they aren't.

Sorry, I don't know if that helps...but I would say....brilliant news on the stopping the cigs, I know it's incredibly hard, having watched my mum do this several times...you can sign up for the Stop Smoking campaign with your local chemist whereby you go in weekly and have your levels tested...it's like a programme, almost Slimming World/Weight Watchers but for smokers.

Well done on the start...great effort!

I really doubt that any harm would be done from a day of exposure. I'm sure they'll be okay, though I agree it's probably wise to vape away from them from now on!

Yes I definitely won't be using them inside anymore. I just feel awful because I thought what was exhaled was harmless in ecigs. Glad I found out after only a day

Well done for giving up smoking, my son gave up before Christmas and uses one an ecig, he'll be using it in a different room or outside from now on lol.

I Haven't had a proper cigarette since Sunday night and I'm finding it strangely quite easy. It must be the ecigs - would highly recommend them to anyone that has never tried them :tu:
