After a lovely cuddle time last night when all was well, when I woke up this morning I noticed one of Elsa's eyes looked sore. Took her to the vets tonight thinking I was big over paranoid and it turned out she had some hay stuck in it and an eye ulcer! She's been prescribed antibiotic drops, lubricant drops and metacam for the pain.. is there anything else I can do for her?! She's going in for a check up on Thursday night to see how the drugs are working. Glad to see though it hasn't put her off her food - she still wheeked for her veggies!
Any advice on how I can help my girl would be much appreciated!

Also for the metacam she's been prescribed 4 drops twice a day, of the 1.5mg metacam for dogs. Does this sound OK? !

Hi you are already dooing a great job, though personaly l would not give that much metercam, the dog streanth if i remember corecly is 3 times that of the cat streanth usualy pescribed for pigs,
if you feel pain meds are needed then l would be just giving 1 drop of the dog metercam

NB That is what l would do, l am not trying to double guess you vet as he is the one assing the eye

The medication sounds right and the dosage for the metacam is correct (ca. 0.2 ml per day).
If you can get the antibiotic drops in three times rather than two times a day, that helps. Thankfully, ulcers tend to come on very quickly, but they also tend to go down fairly easily, especially if a piggy has got prompt vet care.

Oh, poor girl, hay pokes are very painful. My Connie is also recovering from one and due back at the vets tomorrow for a check. I can't advise on Meds (strength or dosage) but if in doubt please check with your vet. My own vet advised to use metacam for only a day and a half to 2 days (as long as she was eating drinking and seemed well) as it can apparently slow down the healing process

Thank you! Thankfully I'm around at lunch time tomorrow and Wednesday before her check up on Thursday evening so will give her drops at lunch time too :) apart from her poorly eye she seems perfectly happy scoffing veggies and hay! Which is a relief :)

Ahh OK! I'll definitely keep an eye on her eating and drinking ! She likes her food and drinks a lot so should be easy to spot if something changes! Hope your little Connie recovers from her hay poke too! Who'd have though a tiny piece of hay could cause something so nasty :(

That hay can be vicious :box:

From all your advice I may take the metacam down to 2 drops twice a day as long as she keeps eating and drinking OK. As am I correct in thinking if she was in a massive amount of pain she wouldn't be eating?

Yes, you can reduce the metacam; it is really helpful with the initial major discomfort, but the eye meds should kick in and the ulcer should start to come down after 2-3 days. You will notice that it is getting somewhat easier to get all the drops in; that is usually a sign that the eye is not longer quite as sore.

All good news from last night! The ulcer is gone, just have to keep up with the meds till the end of the 7 days! :)
