Adult Guinea Pig
As I was working on the New Guinea pig cages, I heard some commotion in the guinea pig room and came in to find my 25lb terrier mix inside the guinea pig cage! I quickly got him out, and saw tufts of fur all over and poor Elsa cowering in a corner squealing! Tiana and Olaf were behind her hiding behind the bunk beds unharmed. I guess she was protecting her babies. Well a 40 min drive to the emergency exotics vet, x-rays, ultrasound, a thorough and very expensive exam and Elsa is ok. Since we are remodeling the house I had moved the baby gate from the piggie room to another door, so we have to remember to shut the door to their room and someone forgot. I guess the dog jumped up on my desk and then into the cage! The vet said she was so lucky to escape with only superficial and soft tissue wounds. I thought she was dying because she was twitching and squeaking the way Sven did when he died in my arms last year. The vet was really nice and gave my daughters a guinea pig anatomy lesson while showing Elsa’s X-rays. I was hysterical thinking she could die, she is the queen of the herd, really she started my herd because she was pregnant when we got her. She has pain meds and antibiotics to keep her comfortable while she heals. The new cages are on higher tables, so even if he accidentally got in their room, he couldn’t get up there.

Olaf was so happy to see that his mommy was ok, when I brought her home he came straight over and started nuzzling and kissing her.
