As I was working on the New Guinea pig cages, I heard some commotion in the guinea pig room and came in to find my 25lb terrier mix inside the guinea pig cage! I quickly got him out, and saw tufts of fur all over and poor Elsa cowering in a corner squealing! Tiana and Olaf were behind her hiding behind the bunk beds unharmed. I guess she was protecting her babies. Well a 40 min drive to the emergency exotics vet, x-rays, ultrasound, a thorough and very expensive exam and Elsa is ok. Since we are remodeling the house I had moved the baby gate from the piggie room to another door, so we have to remember to shut the door to their room and someone forgot. I guess the dog jumped up on my desk and then into the cage! The vet said she was so lucky to escape with only superficial and soft tissue wounds. I thought she was dying because she was twitching and squeaking the way Sven did when he died in my arms last year. The vet was really nice and gave my daughters a guinea pig anatomy lesson while showing Elsa’s X-rays. I was hysterical thinking she could die, she is the queen of the herd, really she started my herd because she was pregnant when we got her. She has pain meds and antibiotics to keep her comfortable while she heals. The new cages are on higher tables, so even if he accidentally got in their room, he couldn’t get up there.5A16CC70-08EC-4AA2-B833-4DA371E642DB.webp57C96346-6FCC-4C82-813D-E700B64954BE.webpA3172F45-160D-47A9-AE42-AFEE794338A7.webp
Olaf was so happy to see that his mommy was ok, when I brought her home he came straight over and started nuzzling and kissing her.5653A5E2-DC82-4702-9762-8DC9345DDE7B.webp92CF41D6-04B7-425C-8AC6-2D3049366D7A.webp

Ouch that looks very sore poor Elsa.

How scary for you! So pleased Elsa is OK if very shocked and shaken through her terrifying ordeal. She was doing her job protecting her herd as is a very brave piggy to stand up to a dog. Olaf is a lovely and loving boy, trying to make her feel better. All your piggies will be shocked by this incident as well as your whole family. Take it easy over the next few days and maybe invest in another baby gate.

Oh no, I’m so glad she’s ok! Hope you all recover from the shock quickly and gorgeous Elsa is feeling better with her meds x

Oh my goodness. What a dreadful shock for you. And how awful for whoever forgot to close the door. I am so glad that Elsa is ok. And those photos of Olaf kissing her are just adorable.

Elsa is doing okay today, she is still in a lot of pain and has just been sitting there all puffed up and won’t leave her little house. I’ve been putting hay and veggies in her house and she is eating. She takes her meds good and I syringe fed her some water since I don’t think she is venturing out to get it on her own. I’m sure she is still terrified and in shock.

Bless her :( might be worth upping the pain meds perhaps? I bet she’s terrified to come out of hiding, it does look quite painful. Fingers crossed she begins to improve

Such a shock for everyone! So glad she is ok, massive hugs to you all

Sounds like she is. It'll take her some time to get over what has happened to her. Could you use the piggy whispering techniques to show her that she is safe and you still love her?

She is very cuddly with me when I get her out to give her meds. They are moving into their new cage in a few days so maybe a fresh start in a new cage will be good for her. To put myself in her position with a creature 10x my size coming at me with big teeth and trying to protect my children, I cannot imagine the trauma!

I'm sure the herd will sort her out confidence wise, sorry to hear this happened.

Poor Elsa, what a shock for you all.
It’s good you got her to the vet so fast.
Holding you all in my heart and praying for a speedy recovery for Elsa
I always feel it’s better to be safe than sorry, so whenever anything happens we go straight to the vet. I was lucky to find an emergency vet on a Saturday night that will see guinea pigs! The vet said she didn’t have to do an X-ray if I didn’t want to pay the money, I said do it all I need to know she’s ok.

My brother has a jack russel terrier and he has to be wary of him around his kids my nieces hamsters. He's fine with cats but not rodents

Aw what a horrible shock for you and poor Elsa. Sending her healing vibes, keep her warm and hopefully she’ll be back to her old self and on the mend in a few days x

It's good that Elsa still sees you as "head of the herd" and she feels safe with you. I'm sure a new room and a new start will be good for her. If I was a piggy I would be in Piggy Wonderland in that beautiful new room! My lot are packing their bags and want to book their plane tickets!

Oh my word, that is terrifying! I can only imagine what you were feeling.

I’m so glad she is okay, she is a beautiful little princess. She has a wonderful human taking care of her. 💕
