Hey guys.

Elvis had rattling breathing about 2 months ago now, I took him to the vet and they gave him a weeks course of baytril. He was fine within a couple of days so I made sure he finished his course anyway.

I fed their greens to them this morning, went to do my rabbits and when I came back, although he was demolishing his food, he has rattly breathing again.

Could this be that he just has some water gone down the wrong way or could it be that he's accidentally inhaled a bit of food? Could it be that he rushes his food and is greedy?
Or do I need to get him to a vets?

Why does he keep getting rattly breathing but his cage mate (touch wood) has never had this problem?

Thank you guys :(
Sam

I would get him checked out.Illness can catch hold really quickly with piggies.Fingers crossed for him.

I agree it is best to get him checked, even if only for your peace of mind. Make sure the vet checks for fluid on his chest, as he would need a diuretic in addition to antibiotics if so.

Thank you guys. I got him checked out and they couldn't find anything wrong with him. They seem to think he just eats so quickly that he sometimes struggles to breathe! What a greedy piggy! Thank you for your advice! :)

My vet is only concerned when there is mucus coming out of their nose but it's best to get piggies checked out as their condition can change so quickly. Misty's breathing was affected by wood shavings and she got a chest infection so we changed to finacard. Sometimes a piggy would sound rattly at times but it didn't develop into anything. My vet said they can sound rattly if food goes down the wrong way...a problem that can happen with syringe feeding. Clove was rattly at times after changing to finacard but we've been rattle free since we changed to fleece a month ago.

Oh right! Okay! I keep them in shavings, maybe this could be what it is? I've just put a new thread up in the bedding section for fleece and how to make sure they aren't wet or dirty. I'm going to swap them over and see if we become rattle free!
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Hopefully my little Elvie won't rattle! :)
