We got Denis a couple of days ago and he has been castrated. But since he has been with my female his penis is permanently stuck out, even when he's relaxing on his own. Any thoughts on what we can do?

I have another male, so i know it's not supposed to be out all the time!

How do i help him "put it back in"?

Is he long or shorthaired? Sometimes hair can wind round it and keep it permanently out but if he's shorthaired it's obviously not that, so other than that sorry don't have a clue. Maybe he just needs time to calm down after being with the fairer sex? ;D

he is shorthaired. yes i thought he might just be too excited ;D

My dog suffered from this problem when he was very young. He totally frightened himself with this and was in a right state! I phoned my brother-in-law (vet), someone went in to the operating theatre where he was doing an op. to ask what I could do! The answer was to soak some cotton wool in cold water and gently place it on him so it shrunk. I did this and it did work but this was painful for him - if I were you I'd phone the surgery and ask them. Please don't do this without checking with an expert, as I said, it was painful for him.

At the time I thought I was going to have to take him to the vets & sit in the waiting room with him - he's only a tiny dog but he was quite well endowed - it would have been really embarrassing! :-[

There is a good chance that his penis will slip back into the sheath once the swelling has gone down. If he were mine I'd keep an eye on it, and if it didn't pop back in within quarter of an hour or so, try as suggested a cold compress.
Obviously speak to your vet if worried, chances are though that this will happen again until he settles down with the girls.

The danger here could be injury caused to it because of exposure and if it become so swollen that the skin around it tightened and interfered with the blood supply causing necrosis. But that would be the worst scenario possible :-\

Hiya,

It's all fixed. I used the one thing i could think of, vasaline. it worked a treat. I just put some of a cotton wool bud and rubbed it round and it just went back in. *few* :)

George has the same problem. His never went back in but it doesn't seem to bother him. I just make sure the area is clean.
