Hi everyone, how long should a course of emeprid usually be?
Our boy Sven had a bit of a reaction to Baytril (vet being cautious about a URI after we heard him whimpering when breathing, with hindsight I think he just had something stuck in his throat because the whimpering stopped after he did a big cough and he had no other symptoms).
The Baytril seemed to cause some not-good looking poos, dry at first, then smaller and flat, like stepped on. Then there weren't many poos at all and his food intake and weight dropped so we syringe fed critical care and started emeprid and probiotics. His food intake is now back to normal and weight has stabilised (he dropped 80g initially, has reclaimed 30g of that) BUT the poos still aren't normal. There are lots that are great, but a few that are still small, or pointy etc. Overnight seems to be a particular problem - they'll look good during the day but when we come in in the morning, there's not as many as there should be and the ones that are there, are the bad type great.
He's been on the emeprid for a week and a half now. I'm not sure if we should stop, as his weight and eating are ok, or continue until all poos are normal? I don't know if there comes a point where it does more harm than good?
Any advice gratefully received.
Lydia

Hello

Continue with the emeprid as long as needed. We had a piggy on it for years long term as she suffered with bloat.

It is a well tolerated drug that keeps things moving through the system. Sending lots of recovery vibes to Sven

Welcome to the forum :)

Please continue. It is safe. My Pili Pala who was diagnosed with IBS (irritable bowel syndrom) in the wake of a severe GI stasis was on it for the rest of her life.

Thanks both, I will continue.
Just wish the silly sausage would hurry up and get better! So much of it has been down to stress - of losing both his brothers, hating being on his own then a failed bond attempt with another, then the vet visit which he did NOT cope well with. Never had so many problems with pigs as I have this set. I know he'd be happier with a friend but the only rescue that will help bond him (he's a tricky one!) is 80 miles away, which is a journey we can't risk until he's 100% well. Fingers crossed he evens out soon or it'll be another vet visit to replenish the emeprid, which I know will set him back again.
