Hi all, we would like to find out if anyone has had any experience with Emeprid medication?

Our guinea pig recently showed a tinge of blood whilst doing a wee. We went to the vets straight away but before this he was making noise when pooping or weeing, not often but about 3-4 times in one week.

We took him to the vets and everything was fine and was showing some discomfort around his stomach. We took a scan as we originally thought he may have bladder stones, our vet told us that he had alot of food in his stomach which was not being passed through quick enough. We was then given Meloxade for pain relief and Emeprid to help push through his gut.

That evening Zinny came home and we gave him the Emeprid. The next morning (Thursday) we gave him both medicine Meloxade and Emeprid, throughout the day he hardly pooped and became very lazy. There was about 5 poops very very small and thin. I knew this wasn't normal but he was still eating hay, pellets and greens.

Again at 7pm (Thursday) we had to give the second dosage of Emeprid and he didn't poop for like 3.5 hours. He was still eating, chewing his wood toys and being very active. Gone 9.30pm he pooped a little bit but not much as we would have been expecting. Around 2.45am I woke up to check on him and noticed he hadn't done any poops (saying that ,he was eating some of his poop, so not entirely sure if he had been pooping and then eating it) Around 6.30am our alarm went off and I checked to see, there was 16 fresh, healthy poops.

By around 9am there was 25 fresh poops in total, which is a good sign, and when he was eating hay he was also pooping like normal. Just after 9am we gave him Emeprid and Meloxade again as told to do so. He pooped up to 5 poops which rang alarm bells for me. I then phoned the vet and explained all of the above to them. I mentioned that it doesn't seem that the Emeprid is working if anything it's stopping him from pooping!

The vet said it was okay to not give it for a couple of days so this evening we have decided not to give the Emeprid but will give him the Meloxade in the morning again.

Has anybody had an experience familiar to this? Could anyone give any advice on this? The vets did annoy me a little bit as they said ring us back in a few days and if nothing changes we will transfer you to an exotic vet. Transferring me after we trial this doesn't sit well with me. As we all know if a piggy stops pooping its very serious. I've been on the phone to multiple vets today and late last night to get a second opinion.

I've finally got in contact with a vet who specialises in guinea pigs who we will be talking to tomorrow which has put our minds to ease.

It's been a stressful last two days but we are very happy that Zinny is pooping more frequently.

Please get in touch if you've had any experience in Emeprid or if a guinea pig has had a full stomach and what was the outcome/ what did you have to do?

Any views or advice would be helpful.

Thank you,
Zinny's dadda and mumma.

Hi and welcome!

It sounds like your piggy may have suffered from GI stasis. Thankfully, emeprid is one of the recommended medications, as is metacam (which you have been given under the brand name meloxade).
You can read more about gastro-intestinal stasis (the guts slowing down dangerously or stopping to work altogether) in this guide here: Digestive Disorders: Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement) And Not Eating

Tiny poos are always a sign that your piggy has hardly eaten anything in the last day or two. You need to step in with switching from weighing once weekly to weighing daily at the same time (unlike poos it gives you a current update of the food intake) and to start support feeding/feeding round the clock according to the severity of the loss of appetite.
You may want to read and bookmark our emergency guide link, so you know better how to step in: Digestive Disorders: Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement) And Not Eating
You can also find the link our whole emergency care information at the top of our Health/Illness section or via the guides shortcut on the top bar.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. That information was very insightful and helpful.

:hug:Thank you very much Wiebke
