oh and i came home from christmas shopping tonight, to discover george all puffed up. i picked him up, and looked at his manly parts, and could obviously tell he was a little impacted (not with poops, with goo and bedding). i tried to get him to eat a piece of pepper, which he refused, so i gave him some probiotic and did my best with cleaning out his business. We took him to the vet, unfortunately they weren't specified in exotics, but the nurse was knowledgable in guinea pigs. also, i figured a regular vet is better than no vet, so we rushed him there. they decided that he has an infection in his perineal sack. so they gave us a script for baytril and some critical care. i have probiotics at home, so i can give that to him too. i have never used CC before, and was surprised how pasty it is. can anyone reccomend some advice? i just want him to recover. what worries me, is that tomorrow i have to graduate, so i will be away for several hours and nobody will be there to give him CC. will he be ok? any advice is welcome. xx

Poor boy, hope he's better soon.
Do you have any 1ml syringes? I find if you cut the nozzle off and file the sharp edges it stops the CC getting clogged up.

I'm not the much if an expert and can't really advise how long he should be left between feeds. It's likely that the vets would be willing to have him for some feeding if you are really worried.

If you have a coffee grinder an alternative to CC is to grind normal pellets and a bit of hay really fine. I find CC a bit thick (although you can always just add extra water) but the 1ml syringe advice is good. If he has gut stasis he might need a mobility drug to get it going again.

Then its a case of tempting him to start feeding himself. If you can still find any dandelions or fresh grass at this time of year I have found that they will eat these before anything else.

Hope he is feeling better soon.

Thanks for the advice. He is still looking sorry for himself this morning. I just hope that he can get through the day while I am gone :( and thanks for the congrats!

This link here gives you good advice: http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html
Please weigh your boy daily and do not not forget that he needs hydrating, too!

You can cut the tip off your syringe just before the nozzle widens for easier feeding. Otherwise ask your vets for a spare 5kg dog metacam syringe - they come with a wider nozzle.

Fingers firmly crossed!

I make up my CC just wet enough so it can be sucked up the syringe. I got some bigger nozzled syringes from Boots, ask the pharmacist as they keep the behind the counter, not expensive. Also could try soaking and mixing his nuggets with the CC as not all piggies like it. Try him though as my one boy loves it, don't have to force him at all. The link Weibke gave you is really helpful. I hope he feels better soon.

how long should it take for him to begin to improve with baytril? he's had 2 doses, he will have the third before the night's over. he still won't eat on his own. maybe i'm impatient, but this is my first experience with an illness. i just want to know if we're on the right track.

Sorry to hear he is poorly, as a rule we have noticed piggies responding to antibiotics in varying times but normally a couple of days. Hope he feels better soon, lots of healing vibes to him x

Sorry to hear George is ill and hope he recovers very soon. Congratulations and hope your graduation ceremonies went well.

Good news! George is beginning to eat hay on his own! He must be coming around, plus he's not puffed up anymore! Gonna keep giving him the critical care for at least today, until I see him eat pellets and veggies willingly. Thanks for your help!

Great news! Lots of vibes to him x
