I got up this morning to a very ill looking Bruno! He was hunched up very limp and not eating or drinking, I did get a bit of water into him and tried with some probiotics. I have rushed him to the emergency vets and they have admitted him to get some fluid in and his tummy moving and then they will look at what is happening.
I am heart broken and a blubbering mess! He has been fine all weekend until last night he didn't come out for tea, he ate it when I gave it to him but was not his usual self. I am now going to attempt to go to work because I can't stand to look at their empty house, poor Harold is with him for support.
Could the change of their hay have done this?

Sorry to hear about your Bruno :( You got him to a vet as soon as you could, and he is in the best place (with Harold for company) so please try not to beat yourself up (HUGS)

I don't think that a change in hay can do anything like what you mentioned above. I feel that if it was something to do with that, then they both likely would have been ill/off colour. The problem with piggies is they often hide their illness and can go downhill quickly.

Fingers crossed they can find out what is happening with him, and he's on the mend soon. Keep us posted 💕

Aw bless him. I hope they find out what’s wrong with him soon. Please don’t beat yourself up, piggies can go downhill very quickly and you’ve got him to the vets in plenty of time x

Hope you find out what’s wrong with poor Bruno soon and he makes a full recovery x

Oh no, so sorry to read this. Hoping that the vets can shed some light and help Bruno

Gingers VERY firmly crossed for Bruno!

Piggies can sadly fall very ill very quickly right out of the blue, so please do not beat yourself up; these things can happen to anybody. I have certainly done my fair share of races to the vet over the years... :(
You are doing exactly the right thing!

Bruno is just home, the vet said she felt he had bucked up enough to come home but I still think he looks very unwell! I've offered him all his usual treats that he has refused which breaks my heart.
They have checked his teeth and they are fine and are just treating him for gut stasis, we have the recovery food and he has emeprid oral solution and ranitidine to be given twice a day. I'm just praying he comes bounding out from his bed! 😢

I am glad that he is still here but sorry that he is not well at all.

I will get him out again shortly to give him some recovery and his meds, they didn't give me much info at the vets when I collected him, it was only a nurse and she was not sympathetic at all! He did just eat a small piece of parsley but puffed up again and wouldn't eat any more

Yes I've got some bio lapis, do I just sprinkle it in? Ive just called the vets to confirm the meds as it was not clear

Have you tried massaging Bruno's tummy? When Betsy had bloat I did this. She wasn't at all happy about being manhandled several times a day. It did help as she was farting like a good 'un. (It was a bit pongy!) Then after a few days she suddenly deflated as all the gas had passed through. It must have been quite painful as the gas was chuntering through. Have you an electric toothbrush with an old toothbrush head? You could try using it next to his tum.

Sorry you didn’t quite get the clear answers you needed. Paws crossed that Bruno will improve 💕

An update on Bruno, he made it through the night and is eating hay and food offered, not his usual gusto. He is still bloated and uncomfortable but he's taking both meds. The recovery food is not going in as he has enough strength to fight now. I am sprinkling the pro biotics on small pieces of cucumber. We have massaged him with an electric razer minus the head part! He was farting before and quite loud! I'm still very worried about him but there are improvements which is so good. Both my self and partner were up in the night checking on him so we are exhausted plus not eating properly ourselves with all the stress and rushing to and from work. I'm hoping this can pass and that he will keep making improvements he always had a good tum and been a prolific pooper this is so strange! 😓

I just got home after praying the whole way that Bruno was ok and find this!
He's not bloated he's eating and drinking and looking for food and his favourite jumping on things! Omg! That was three days of hell, my other half took the day off to be with him and was sending me txts saying he's not good and we'd called the vets again for advice! But he's back! Stiff drink needed!

Glad to hear it! They do give is a fright don’t they!

I have never experienced bloat before and that was scary! He was so unwell and so quickly, he's still not getting away from his medication though and it will be a real fight now he's back! But that's what I love about him! 😍

Just catching up with this thread, poor Bruno, bloat is very scary and painful! I think a lot of people assume its a mild tummy ache but we almost lost a piggy to acute bloat and it is the most awful sudden thing... glad Bruno is feeling better, but bloat does often recur so keep an eye on him and keep hold of any left over bloat medicines for a few weeks just to be on the safe side! Our bloat survivor Puggle sends Bruno healing wheeks and piggy kisses x
Puggle almost died with acute bloat then helpfully bloated almost every weekend for 2 months with emergency vet trips until we paid £80 for a 3 month supply of bloat medicines as the vet said it was a long term thing... she's only bloated once since, but its good to be prepared!

That is some very good advice! We are due back at the vets tomorrow for his check up, and I will buy some more while I'm there! He has gone a bit glum again but has for the first time in three days sat and had tea with Harold we did not need to poke the food at him this time.
I think he would have died if he did not get to the vets on Monday it is so serious! Me and my other half keep trying to figure out why he has it and blaming our selves for giving him treats over the weekend, changing the hay and any thing else he came into contact with. What is the best remedy for bloat? I was wondering if they can eat mint and if that would help?

I was told by my vet, too much sitting around and too much leafy greens are the things that bring on bloat. My sow gets bloat from time to time, but the fat pig never stops eating her hay even when bloated. Lol

Too much leafy veg, or certain types of veg, can be triggers for some piggies... usually cabbage type veg but with Puggle it seemed to be coriander, we took for off coriander for months and now we never let her have more than 2 stems of it! Some people suggest grain free pellets are better for bloaty pigs too. But I think like some people are more prone to get problems and IBS etc some piggies are just more bloat prone... our vet suggested that maybe Puggle possibly has a rather tight valve at the bottom of her stomach or a rather narrow small intestine, that makes it easy for gas to get trapped.
