Hey everyone!

My wife and I have 2 pigs, they are currently in a C&C cage with an external hayrack that slots on to the side of the cage. The issue is that my wife has a hay allergy, and I also have a mild allergy. I thought a solution might be to find a hayrack or housing that is sealed all the way around (other than the area for the piggies to eat from!) and therefore cut down the exposure to the hay as it is not out in the open.

I've been searching online, but can't seem to find a solution, I bought a stand off amazon but the hay doesn't filter down as they eat it, so it's no good unfortunately. So, I thought i'd come to the experts instead! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!
Dan

You could buy a box. Tie it to the grids and cut holes where they can pull out the hay. Would that work?

Also what hay are you giving them? There are some on here who are allergic and seemed to get better when they changed the hay.

Thanks for the quick reply Siikibam! That is a good idea, I will look into that, I was hoping a product existed that looked nice and gave us some protection.

The hay we use is Apline, all the others we've tried make the allergies a lot worse, but it still causes the wife to have a tight chest and can give her a cough, so if I can seal the majority of it away then I think that could help.

Thanks again!

Could she take an antihistamine daily? I know it’s not ideal but perhaps it could help with some of the symptoms. Does she have an inhaler for the right chest?

Some people use hay bags - it’s a fabric bag which is held onto the cage by hooks with a large hole or two at the bottom for the piggies to get the hay out. I don’t use them so I don’t know how effective they are at keeping allergies down, or how easily the piggies can get the hay out. If you look in the members galleries in the housing section you may find some pictures (or if somebody sees this thread who uses them may be able to post a picture for you)

She used to have an inhaler, the pigs are in another room now, but we are moving shortly and they may come back into the living room again, hence the search for a solution. I suppose she could take a tablet, but I think your box solution could work also, as the dust from the hay would be contained to the box!

Thanks Piggies&buns, i'll take a look!

Are you not able to keep them in another room again? I’d take a tablet daily for now and see if it helps. Also get herself some inhalers again.

I want to try the hay in box as well. I bought the piggies some oat hay and worry about hay poke 😬

by the way:wel: we’d love to see photos of your piggies. Fell free to start a thread for them and introduce yourself in the intro section as well. And please can you add your location - state/county or country - to your profile.

Thanks Siikibam, i'll get round to that!

We're currently in a two bedroom town house, but will be moving into a one bedroom apartment. Oddly is has more space for 'things' but one less room. So it's most likely going to be the shaded terrace (which we haven't had before) and then living room if it gets colder - although I've lived in Gibraltar a few years now and it never gets cold here! (We're getting them an outdoor hutch if they do go outdoors) - the pets a home fox glove looks appropriate.

Be aware the ramp looks a little steep. And you’d have to add some sides to it. Chartwell hutches are also well liked on here so have a look at them as well.

That's a great heads up thank you, I will look into Chartwell now!
