Since losing my beautiful Rufus earlier this week, our little Merlin has become a single piggy. Most of you know Merlin's story
With life moving so quickly, things changing and us being so busy; we made the difficult decision not to keep piggies any more. And we definitely don't want young Merlin to spend his life as a single pig (he thrives on company).
Merlin will be leaving us this weekend to return to the wonderful @Wiebke . He is such a lovely boy (he has lived with 3 of my boars and never caused a problem); and I have no doubt he will find perfect friends with Wiebke's help. He will get to live the rest of his life is such a brilliant home. We honestly could not have wished for better for him.
And a huge thank you goes to @Claire W who will be taking Merlin with her to his new home (or should I say, back to his wonderful home at Wiebke's house) when she next visits Wiebke. It is very comforting to know that he is in the best of hands.
Wiebke very kindly let a very young Merlin (he was so tiny) come to live with us when my older boar Thor lost his companion just over a year ago. Merlin very quickly bonded with Thor and they got along famously. They then also bonded with Boris (when Boris lost Jacob) and became a very successful boar trio. Whilst young and some times overly confident (with some very cute rumble strutting may I add....) Merlin never caused any problems for the older boys and his submissive nature meant he soon got out of the way should they have asked him to. The older boys always took him under their wing, and I would often find them all sat together in their hay piles. I'm sure they enjoyed watching young Merlin pop corning around the cage as they took a very comfortable back seat due to their advanced ages. He was definitely their source of entertainment! I'm sure in their own piggy way, they also imparted some wisdom on young Merlin.
The most recent boar to look after Merlin, was my one remaining older boar, Rufus. Not being the most confident of boars I've had, Merlin does thrive on company and having other piggies around; he seeks confidence from the others. He's been struggling since Rufus passed. He gained much confidence around us as Rufus was very confident with his hoomans. He soon learnt from Rufus, that the first one to trot over to the hoomans in a morning may get an extra nugget.....
He would go anywhere Rufus went, as long as Rufus went first.... It was funny to watch him assessing the situation when Rufus would climb into my lap. The look on his face most certainly said "What on earth is that piggy doing climbing on that hooman......."
It feels really bittersweet to be writing this. We are upset at the thought of letting our lovely little Merlin go, but at the same time over joyed that he is returning to his family and a wonderful home (after doing such a good job keeping my older boys company). It is also the end of an era for us. We hav thoroughly enjoyed piggy ownership, and as a result have met some wonderful, life long friends via this forum. It is going to be really strange for us, and the house will be that bit quieter! Koda is going to be wondering where the funny little creatures from behind the big door have gone!
We would mostly like to thank Merlin. Thank you Merlin for being such a good companion to my different elderly boys. Thank you for being such a lovely character. We will miss you, but we look forward to hearing updates of how well you are doing in your new wonderful home
We love you always
