Hi everybody,

We have a sow that suffered a miscarriage and got sick as a result of the delivery. We have been to the vet 4 times now, changed vet because we didn't trust the diagnosis.

We're 99% sure she suffers from pelvic instability (literal translation) and I'm researching this illness now, but information in Dutch is very limited. Because I can't find the English term, info in English is also extremely limited... The medication isn't helping so I'm getting hopeless.

Can someone tell me the right term to google?
Does someone have hands on experience with this problem?

Thanks for your help.

Symphysis pubis dysfunction

Thats the term for humans , but I don't know whether it also applies to guinea pigs? Sorry l have no other knowledge of this condition in pigs.

Hi and welcome

I assume that your girl did have an x-ray to see whether the pelvis is not broken or misformed due to a traumatic birth?

Would you please be so kind and add your country to your details, so we can always take into account that you are in a different country and not a native English speaker. Click on your username on the top bar, then go to personal details and scroll down to location. Thank you! We have got members from all over the English speaking world.

thank you.

No she hasn't got an x-ray. Neither of the vets has spoken about that. We're are taking her there again tomorrow so I'll ask about it. But, I didn't open this topic to talk about what we are doing (wrong) corcerning her illness. We are very concerned about her and we do everything in our power to get her back on her feet. I hope my search on foreign sites is a sign of that.

I think Wiebke was just looking for a little more information so she could advise rather than trying saying you were doing anything wrong. Often on this forum (and others) people ask questions but people need a little more information to help them work out what is happening and then how they can help people best.

We have members from all over the world and with very different levels of experience in keeping guinea pigs so don't feel bad if someone asks for more information, they just want to give you the best advice they can!

Thanks for your reply. And I didn't mean my reply negative. On Dutch fora it's not umcommen if someone asks a quiestion out of good will the whole community puts down the topicstarter negatively for something that has nothing to do the question. This toghether with the langauge barier made me misjudge the situation if you are right. Sorry for that

As an completion to my earlier story..

I have had animals my whole live and have the confidence I know what I'm doing and whats good for my animals. I've done a equestrian study and have more than avarage experience with medical issues with horses. Been part of multipal deliverys and traumas. Eventhough a horse is not comparible with an guinea pig, I learn that my experience in this field is very usefull with the piggies. I got my first pig (as an adult) 1,5 years ago, two sows with no direct intention to breed. After my 2nd foal was born this spring we wanted to expend our guinea pig herd with a litter. This hobby got a little bit out of hand and now we have 14 grown pigs. Most of them are not for breeding, but we have a couple of sows that have gotten a litter or are carying at the moment. I just found out in this topic that this forum is against breeding, if I knew that I wouldn't have registerd. They all live in our living room, we have build a big cage for them and have a smaller one as well. In total we have 8 floors of living space for them.

I'm very serious about what I do so if I have an animal in destress I learn whatever I can to understand their illness and know how to treat it. Because there are not a lot of vets here specialised in guineas I started searching online and found this forum. I hope I can still stay a member for (medical) research. For your information, we only breed with a purpose and we never have more than 2 pigs on a 120cm * 60cm surface. If we place a piggy and the new owner decides for whatever reason to sell it, we take them back and let them live in our group.

We never judge or criticise anybody's actions on our forum, but we are in the habit of asking for more information where necessary so we know what has already been or not been done. Vet care can vary widely. This is important to develop suitable avenues to explore with your vet next, especially if you are coming here with an ongoing problem. ;)

We had the case of a sow that has ended up with a broken pelvis in the wake of a traumatic birth on here, and one of my own sows, which was rescued from a horrendous backyard breeding situation, was found to have malformed pelvis caused by too many back-to-back pregnancies at a young age. Both conditions were only discovered via an x-ray, so this seems to be the next logical step if your girl is suffering continuing discomfort, as that may tell you and your vet whether there is any major damage to the pelvis or whether she is suffering from another problem.

Have any of the vets checked for pyometra; infection of the womb lining? I am asking that for the same reason, as it can happen occasionally even will well cared-for sows.

I don't know the correct terminology, but my vet is actually Dutch. I will be in touch with her about my own sick piggy next week, so I can ask her to translate for me from Dutch to English, if this was what you were looking for? If you haven't found an answer by Wednesday next week, just write the term in Dutch for me and I will ask her.
