Before I start, I'm deaf. I try my best to English as I use BSL

My baby called Cheeky, she will be 4 years old in Nov. Cheeky been the vet last Fri, the vet says can feel enlarge kidneys and ovaries also urine is discoloured and under the microscope I can see lots of red blood cells. Cheeky take antibiotics - Baytril 0.4ml twice a day. She go back to the vet on Tuesday for her scan. Should I worry or ? I wonder do one of yours, happened like that. Thanks for your help :) xx

Ovarian cysts are pretty common in older sows, and there are now alternative non-invasive hormone treatments possible.

The enlarged kidneys are more worrying.

My girl had her first hormone injection today, so speak with your vet and enquire about them incase of any cysts. I cannot help with the enlarged kidneys though, metacam may help.

Oh I see.. I can't hear her squeaky as wish I do. She lost her hair that why I took her to the vet and mention about discoloured of urine as thought was dye of carrot... Guilty :(

Sorry i didn't get back very quickly, I'm on and off the board and at work etc. A scan is a black and white picture like they do with the pregnant ladies in humans. You will be able to see shapes and outlines of organs etc, this way you can usually locate what and where something is, for example they will see the ovaries are cystic or measure the size of the kidneys. I have found the last few scans ive had on piggies that it can occationally be difficult to see exactly where things are in the abdomen as piggies are so small and there is a lot of gas in the guts sometimes. (this will block a good view). This does not mean don't do it, you should still get a good answer, and it depends on what your vet will be more confident in interpreting and if a scan is what they prefer def go for that.

Sometimes xrays can be useful in different terms. Cystic ovaries will show up well on this, they should stand out like two darkened round objects on the picture. We can interpret them by the whiter material being dense, the darker being fluid/little density. (Hence bones being white). They may be able to measure the kidneys for enlargement too, if the xray were good.

There is for and against both to be honest, and its probably best to go with the vets judgement and what they are more happy with. Just thought i would put the idea of an xray out there.

Good luck.
x.

Yes hair loss from the sides is a symptom of ovarian cysts, so you were correct to of taken her to the vets :). Not all of them to squeaky wee's so please don't worry about not being able to hear. My girl only did it a couple of times, but I always know when there is something wrong with my pets even if they aren't any visible symptoms.

Hopefully the scan will let you know what's going on and you can easily treat it. Good luck to you and Cheeky x

Hiya Abi...

Wow, interesting and thanks so much for your time to explain.
X

Thanks Leah for explain.

Lucky sometime I do hear Cheeky when she beg for food, it so loud lol. Every time when I go to the fridge, Oero and Cheeky make noise, so funny and cute. I see Oero, when she makes noise, she take her tongue out and make a noise lol.
How is year piggy, how she coping now, I know just started it so how often to get injection.

Thanks again x

The vet explained, (different vet) she decide go for x ray as rather not use scan... She feeling that ovaries is normal so depend Kidney or Bladder so find out the result at 1 30pm. Surprise Cheeky still bleed in her urine as thought feeling better after took Baytril last Fri :(

The pig who had the injection is fine thank-you, I'm just waiting for a call from the vets to discuss when her next one is :).. the injection doesn't make them feel poorly, infact she seemed a bit better when she got home!

Sending lots of love to Cheeky and hoping you get some more answers this afternoon regarding Kidneys and bladder. Let us know what the vet says.

Her urine is getting darker, as the vets never see before so waiting for pathology to get in touch. Will find out on Fri as possible. The x ray, the bladder and ovaries seem normal but right kidney large and left kidney is larger. One thing to try stop eat carrot to see any improving.
She is happy to be home with Oero x

Hugs to you its not nice seeing them go through so much. I have an old lady with kidney disease and she was diagnosed when she had ovarian cysts. As has been said, cysts are fairly common in older sows and bladder/kidney problems are common too. With discolouration of the urine it does indicate that there might be an infection or maybe even stones causing the problem so it could be something treatable. Hope you get your results soon

Aww thanks for hug. How old is she?
Cheeky don't have bladder stone either kidney stone as just large kidney but my Cheeky look fine as worried about urine so wait until on 19th to see how she go without carrot. Xx

Bea is around 6 years old so she's done well though she's still fighting and not ready to give up on life just yet. I got told that carrot and other coloured veg can cause discolouration in urine as well so its worth trying them without it. In case there is something like a uti I would feed more watery veggies like cucumber and green peppers to try and help flush her system a little

Thanks Kelly, wow 6 years old and good fighter. It that Bea on your profile, bonny lady.

I notice Cheeky not drink much but yes I did give cucumber and pepper as plenty of fluid. She finished with Baytril, she hate it :(
Got result as it wasn't blood as the vet thought it was....Just carry on with carrot until on 19th to see any improving with Cheeky s urine also check the feeling of kidneys to see any different.

Xx

Hey .... Got result, wasn't blood... Grr got me worrying too much! But still check on her on 19th to see any improving with her urine.

Thanks for wish her good luck x
