My 5 year old sow has an enlarged toenail which is getting more pronounced but doesn’t appear to bother her. Any ideas what this could be?

We've had something similar in a few older piggies... Never caused any issues.
I wonder if the toe has been damaged at some point?

Would you think it’s ok to leave? I’m paranoid about treating if anaesthetic is involved after losing dear Buffy

Hi

Thickened nails in older or even middle aged piggies are not uncommon at all. It's nothing to worry about. I have currently got two piggies with one; a 6 year old and a 3 year old.

There is nothing you or your vet can do. Occasionally, a mild fungal infection on the toe (not ringworm and not affecting the companions) can be the cause of it.

Try to cut the nails back diagonally from both sides in little bits as they are more difficult to deal with in that respect.

That’s so reassuring thanks so much!
