I'm just pre-planning my piggies move outside to their Summer quarters & have hit on a problem. I have a Thistle Hall hutch from Pets at Home & last year this was fine for my pigs but I only had 2 at the time - now I have a group of 7! Obviously the hutch is too small for that amount of pigs & I was wondering if anyone could tell me how much space is recommended so I can go about sorting something out for them. One option (for the short-term) is using the hutch but attaching my run (which is almost 30 square feet) so they could free-range in this during the daytime & I could just shut them in at night. Opinions please? Thanks xx

What size is the hutch?

The recommended space is 4' x 2' for a pair and then another 1' for every additional pig, so 3 in a 5' x 2' etc.

I have a large group in a pen in my shed which is probably 6' x 5'.

I think a shed/wendy house would be good. You can get some for quite a reasonable price.

Have a look on ebay for some :)

I like this one:

You could put levels in it to create more room.

Well the hutch is a double decker with a ramp & equates to about 15.5 square feet of space. For 7 pigs I'd need 9'x2' right? So that would be about 18 square feet? A 6'x'5 shed would give 30 square feet so that would be fab! Are yours on the floor or are they raised up somehow? & do you just leave the door open for fresh air

If you or someone you know is handy with DIY may be you could saw the door in half (so it looks like a stable door) and put predator proof wire mesh at the top half of the door thus leaving the bottom half closed and the top half open during the day. Then at night, you could close the whole door up? x

Hey Claire, that is a good idea, looks brilliant that does. I have one similar for my daughter, that my dad made. She is too big for it now, so I was going to sell it. I thought of using it for my own piggies but they are too soft to live outdoors.:)):)):))

Ooh, what a fab idea! I wouldn't have thought of that. My brother in law is brilliant at all things that require sawing and hammering, lol - he made my indoor pens for me - so I daresay he could do that for me. Cheers! :)
