Hello!

I have the loveliest pair of boars. They are really content with munching on hay and aren't very active in their C&C. It is the bare minion for boars I am afraid at 2x5 with a 2x2 loft. I intend to extend it to a 2x6 come winter. They have a lovely huge run, but oh, the UK weather right now! It looks like a solid week of rain.

And while I do try to get them out for floor time most days, I am putting pressure on myself to do this and my work is suffering for it, as I do lose time / hours setting it all up and cleaning it all away.

So my question is, if there are a few days where I don't get them out for floor time, how can I make their C&C more enriching for them? What they currently have:

1. A hay tray
2. Hay covering the entire loft for them to play/nest/eat.
3. A snuggle sack and a snuggle fleece pepper pot with two exits. A log tunnel. And a card box box with two exits.
4. A few hay refills a day )although I am struggling to dispose of this without annoying my DH and filling up all his compost bins! Any ideas?!).
5. Snacks through the day of not going out like grass and different feeding hay
6. They are happy to come out and be held for snacks - just got them both out for some coriander. :-)
7. Floor time for 1-2 hours on the days I am organised enough!
8. Two fleece forests

As I said, they do seem happy and content I think?! As they just munch on the hay and sit quietly, they do this even if out in the run or floor time, often favouring just sitting quietly and eating, rather than running a lot. I think they are both around a year to 18 months old. No fighting between them. I just want to give them the best life possible, and would like some DIY or inexpensive C&C enrichment ideas.

Thank you for any tips! X

Have a look at the guide I’ve linked below. I’m not sure what else you could do. Carrot cottage maybe, or something similar?
Enrichment Ideas for Guinea Pigs

Lovely - thank you, I will check this out.

I've already purchased the carrot cottage! I rotate it with different hides. :-)

A long tunnel tube thing might be good - I'll keep an eye out for one of those.

A 2x5 is not the minimum for boars - it’s the recommend size! A 2x4 is the minimum for two boars but is generally too small. Upgrading to a 2x6 will be lovely for them but as I said a 2x5 is absolutely perfect, so don’t feel bad about that!

Best enrichment is having each other!
I demolished my piggy shed on Sunday with the new one arriving and being built hopefully on Saturday, so my two boars are confined to their hutch this week (run time isn’t going to happen with the rain currently pouring down!). Mine aren’t ones for playing and instead love nothing more than sitting in a pile of hay. This week they are being kept occupied with a carrot cottage, toilet rolls stuffed with hay and plenty of forage mixed into their hay.

I put the carrot cottage back in, and found Pipsqueak sitting on top of it! I didn't know they could hop / jump up onto things!

One of mine always gets on top of hideys!
Due to the way my cage was set up, I had to have my grids two grids high just to be sure he didn’t use a hidey to try to escape (New shed now and it’s enabled a slightly different set up so I don’t have the worry of him trying it now!)
