Hi All,
I need help please! My vet gave me enrocare to treat my guinea pig Boh's abscess. It's 25mg/ml and he said to give 0.5ml twice a day. I just administered the first dose but then read the package leaflet and got a shock because it says the correct dose for rabbits and rodents is 0.2ml per kg bodyweight orally diluted in water! Boh weighs around 1.3kg. Also, it says "The undiluted veterinary medicinal product is strongly alkaline and, therefore, to avoid caustic effects, it is essential to dilute the product with at least 4 parts water prior to administration." My vet didn't say anything about diluting it first! Could it have been pre-diluted by him? It's a sticky, watery liquid and Boh thinks it's disgusting. So worried I gave him too much and because it's Sunday, I can't call my vet before tomorrow! It's an exotics hospital so I assume they know what they're doing but worried the vet may have forgotten to tell me to dilute it?

I’m really sorry I don’t know. Is there an out of hours number you could call? x

They have an emergency number but that's really just for emergencies. I think I won't give him the second dose today and call first thing tomorrow morning.

Yeah, you need to check with the vet on this, depends on the strength of baytril solution.

If you have doubts about any medication, please contact your vet clinic to confirm that the dosage and concentration is OK. You are allowed to contact them any time they are open.
The dosage itself is correct if the product is the same strength and concentration as baytril.
There are currently new rodent/small exotics variations of common antibiotics coming on the market. I don't have any experience with this product yet myself and am not a medications specialist.

Enrofloxacin is another name for Baytril.

Was it a sealed container @Liv or was it decanted into a bottle? If it was decanted it could have been pre-mixed by the vet. I've had a vet try to give me Baytril in the past mixed with water. My pigs hate it so I declined as it just means I'd have to try to get a bigger quantity into them.

It may not seem like an emergency but I would still ring the out of hours number for advice. If it is the wrong dose it could become an emergency if it adversely affects your piggy.

My vets always mix up meds to the specified concentration first. I would be amazed if an exotics specialist gave you a highly caustic substance having forgotten to dilute - my advice is to stop panicking and follow the instructions the vet gave you.

One of mine was on enrocare for months and if there was any diluting happening it was definitely happening at the vet surgery not at home. Vets/vet nurses routinely have to make up medications to the required concentrations: for example, many antibiotics come in tablet form and the nurses crush and mix with water before dispensing so we can easily syringe feed into rodents.

Thanks, he seems his normal chipper, greedy self so I'm hoping the dose was right. I too would be surprised if the Royal Dick vets exotics practice messed up because they have an excellent reputation and I've been using them for almost a year now with great satisfaction.
@Jaycey it's just the generic Enrocare bottle - no seal that required breaking - it's one of those where you have to push down and turn the cap to open. There was a plastic stopper inside that you can pull out and put back, so I can't tell if it's already been opened. It's only about half full though so that might indicate that it's been premixed and measured out? Will keep an eye on Boh and call the emergency number if he suddenly seems adversely affected. I just don't want to occupy the emergency line for no good reason, if you know what I mean...

Update: spoke to my vet (via the receptionist) who confirmed it is undiluted and that 0.5ml twice a day is the correct dosage. He said they always give out enrocare and baytril undiluted and that it's perfectly safe... He said the recommended 0.2ml per kg in the leaflet is the minimum amount and that it's fine to go higher.
My mind is still not 100% at ease because why would the package leaflet warn of caustic effects and say dilution is essential if that's not true?

Update 2: Just checked the composition of baytril and it's exactly the same as enrocare! 25 mg/ml enrofloxacin and 14 mg/ml benzyl alcohol. That does make me feel a little better. So if 0.5ml baytril twice a day is fine, the same must be true for enrocare!
