Just the other day I read on a german guinea pig forum that there seems to be some sort of strange disease going round..

The girl said her vet rang her, asking if her piggies were alright. She replied - very confused - yes, why, why is he asking? And he told her that lately alot of piggies were dying, a case of seemingly fine piggies just lying dead in their cages in the morning, same with rabbits.. This was the area Mainz-Bingen.
Post-mortem didnt give any indication as to why they died either..
Then a friend of this girl told her that 4 of her rabbits died in one week aswell.. All very scary and mysterious. :(

Another girl replied, saying she already heard about this last October, happening area Frankfurt, so not too far from Mainz..

apparently its affecting both indoor and outdoor kept piggies and rabbits, and apparently wild rabbits aswell? A girl replied saying last summer they had loads of wild rabbits dying in her area..

We are all really upset and scared, and I am wondering if it could come over here too :-(

I hope not, there do seem to be a lot of people on this forum whose piggies are sadly dying... I don't know if that is because there are a lot of piggies that we talk about and so there will unfortunately be some who leave us, but it dies seem to be a lot....
The only thing I have heard about rabbits is that there have been outbreaks of miximytosis (don't know if thats the right spelling) in this area... both of ours have been vaccinated so I hope they are OK... I'd be gutted if anything happened to them. :'(

I'm just telling Nele in Berlin about it,shes really worried now :( :'(

but it does seem a weird coincidence that a lot of us are losing them

Could it be something in the hay or the food? Like abug or a termite? It seems that every time I log on someone's poor lil piggie has died...

thats just what i thought earlier :(

i had that problem about 6 years ago when i had 12 rabbits and 2 guineas they all died within a couple of days and the vets done a post mortom on few of them and they couldn't find any reason why. they said it might be a bug. When one died i will clean and scrub every cage out to make sure it didn't spread but it must of.

It really upset me and thats why it took me 5 years to have any more.

Oh no Shez thats so sad. I wonder what it was?
My colleague's rabbit died recently of middle ear disease and she gave me a load of his toys/chew stuff for our rabbits... I felt bad but I chucked them all away in case our buns caught anything...

Were they kept outside? Coudl it have been spread by other animals like foxes or rats?

yes they was kept outside.

thats another reason why i got my boys inside because i don't want nothing to hurt them. Even if someone in the house has a cold or anything they have to stay out of the way of the guineas

A friend in Berlin lost 2 pigs and a rabbit really recently and didnt know why, maybe it could be that? :'(

Could there be a new ingredient in the commercial sprays for the hay? I did have a thought that maybe there is an contaminated batch of corn or something that all the pet food manufaturers buy from has got into the system...?

Its gotta be somethin like that,or all the crap they spray on the veggies etc, even though we wash them i still think there maybe something on them :(

deep down i know they must of caught something but i wish i knew what.

But now i am 5 years old than i was and i have learn't so much since i had my two guineas last year.

i wouldn't of thought about bring them in for the winter if it wasn't for this forum. But i am so glad i have as they love the warmth so much.
