I'm picking some megazorb up tomorrow from a equestrian store and wondered if the hay from there would be steralised? are they normally? I dont want to buy any incase of mites.

any ideas?:)p

No hay is sterlized, it cant be as sterilization involves the use of steam and hay cannot be steamed! Lice in hay is one of those annoying things we can do nothing about I'm afraid :)

We use hay bought from a local livery/feed supplier and it is usually better quality than any I can buy from local pet shops. As Lavendarjade says unfortunately little bugs do sometimes find their way into hay - no matter where you buy it.

If you are concerned about your suppliers hay ask for a sample I'm sure they will oblige - at our livery you can buy a small bag to try before commiting to a bale. Good luck

If you are going to the Hungry Horse I had some lovely hay off them.

I buy megazorb from a horse feed supplier and purchase bales of hay from them never had a problem with hay from there but have from pet shops. I also get graze on from there used to use readigrass but once it was not made for spillers I found it not so nice.
Hay brought by the bale works out much cheaper and horses are fed good hay mines smells divine.

We used to steam hay for one of our horses are she had COPD. All you do is put the hay in to a plastic container that has a lid, we used to use the big plastic bins as we were steaming about a bale every night for her. Boil the kettle and pour it in, we used too have to put around 5 kettles in but if your only doing a slice then you put a lot less in. Then close the lid tight and leave it till it has cooled. It smells really nice when its steaming we used to warm our hand up on the bin in the winter when it was freezing lol
We used to feed the horse it when it had cooled but for the pigs you may want to do it the night before and let it dry.
