Hi all

I had to have my 4 month old boar put to sleep yesterday afternoon as since the first day I bought him from pets at home, he had a chest infection and then pneumonia. He had crusty eyes but this was resolved with isthal ointment. Although he ‘recovered’ from the chest infection, he was left with slightly laboured breathing and recent scans showed he has only one functioning lung. He has been on metacam since day 1 and bayril initially.

He lived as normal as can be life for a month until he got an eye ulcer from grass seed in the garden and this was resolved after 2 weeks of eye drops. He was fine for 2 days and then he got a bad head tilt. He couldn’t even stand without being wobbly. I asked the vets maybe he should be put to sleep and she said no, it broke my heart to suggest it but she said it’s an inner ear infection and baytril should help. It did help initially for 4 days and he has one clear day of no head tilt but the day he was put to sleep, he wasn’t taking his syringe feed like before and the head tilt and worsened. Hardest decision I ever made but I decided time had come. Here is my concern:

I took him to my vets who have never seen him before as Teddy was seen by the pets at home vets for previous issues. The vet checked his breathing and heart beat and said it was best to put him to sleep as he will never have a quality of life. He didn’t discuss how he was going to put him to sleep and I imagined an injection that will peacefully make him fall asleep or gas sedation. I didn’t ask any questions about it as I was assured my the receptionist he’s got 20 years experience and is a good man. I had my 2 daughters with me and the vet said can you sign this form to give me permission. I said yes. I then started to say goodbye to Teddy and my girls wanted to hold him one last time. The vet said he will go out and get the euthanasia equipment.

When he came back... he said can you all go out. I said I want to stay and my eldest daughter went out and my youngest who is 9 wanted to stay. The vet said he doesn’t recommend us watching as it can be distressing and I said I want to stay as Teddy took comfort from me. I asked if I could hold Teddy and vet said no as he has to have access to his tummy so he needs to be on the table. At which point my youngest started to cry and said she wanted to leave as she had seen the needle.

I saw the needle and before I had a chance to ask about sedation, he put the needed into the tummy and took it out because it wasn’t in right place. At which point Teddy’s eyes had widened and he opened his mouth really wide. The needle quickly went back in and the solution was injected. Teddy again gasped mouth open wide when the needle went in 2nd time and then slowly kept opening and closing his mouth. I began to cry and the vet said “he’s not quite gone so I have to give him the injection again”. He gave the 3rd one but Teddy was heavily sedated to notice I think and it took 2 seconds and he was gone.

I asked where the injection went in and he said the liver.

I’m very upset he wasn’t sedated first and then it took 3 needles. So I called back today to ask why wasn’t he sedated. They tell me the vet doesn’t like using the gas sedation because it means taking the pet away from owners onto the theatre and placing into a small box with 2 gas chambers and many pets hold their breath as they don’t like the smell and it takes sometimes minutes to be sedated and many pets fall over and feel funny. Thereby getting distressed.

I told them I was upset that he seemed to have passed away in discomfort and I wanted him to go peacefully since his whole short life he had so many issues with his health.

I just find it so unfair and I can’t stop crying. He was so cute and my handsome boy.

I’m so sorry that you had to watch that :( I’m not sure what to say as my vet has always taken my piggies away to be put to sleep as they have been sedated first. But be assured that you made the right decision.

I was with my cat a couple of months ago when he was put to sleep. He went peacefully but it is distressing to watch :(

Its more so that it took 3 attempts and also that my Teddy wasn’t sedated before an inch long needle was inserted into his abdomen. And then also that I wasn’t informed this is what was going to be done. He was a baby and really deserved to go peacefully. I can’t get over how he was forced down on the table and then the needle going into his tummy (vet said it was in liver).

It’s always a hard decision deciding if to there or wait in another room. I think you made the right decision having him pts. I’m so sorry that it didn’t feel as peaceful as it should have been x

I'm so sorry you and him had to go through that, it's already a tough time, without something traumatic happening! As far as I'm aware, they really should be gassed first, I wonder if it's worth putting in a complaint? I know they're small, but if they can't locate the liver first time they really shouldn't be doing it conscious.

I'm sorry for your loss :(

I’m so sorry that you had to witness that :( If you are unhappy with what happened, you could put in a complaint as the vet should have talked you through the procedure to see if you were happy to go ahead :(

I am so sorry for your loss, what an awful experience for you. When we had to have Gladys PTS recently, she was already sedated from having X-rays and the vet let me hold her whilst he gave her in injection into her tummy. He explained the whole process and what would happen as my children wanted to stay with her (age 12 & 14).

I think you should complain that the process wasn't fully explained to you... again sorry for your loss x

That is so heartbreaking so sorry for your loss, but it sounds like you gave him the best possible care while he was with you so don't ever feel guilty

What an awful experience. I thought that they were supposed to sedate your piggy before giving the injection. I'm sure one of the more experienced forum members will be along soon to confirm if your vet followed the correct procedure.
I so sorry for your loss. RIP little one.

I am so sorry for both your loss and the fact it was distressing.
You were very brave to stay with him and I am sure he took comfort from knowing you were there.
I have (sadly) had various animals put to sleep over the years and what I have learnt is that every vet has their own prefered method, and all of them do things slightly differently.
However everything has always been explained to me clearly before hand and I was always given the option to stay (which I always do).
I am sorry that your vet did not take the time to do this for you.

However as hard as it feels right now their loss is simply a few moment that do not define their lives.
You did everything you could for Teddy in his short time with you, and he was lucky to have had you as his devoted owner.

Thank you much for everyone’s kind words. I syringe fed him 6 times a day and every locum vet we saw at vets for pets said it was a miracle he was still alive. He had a run around on the grass before I took him to the vets to be pts and he had lots of cuddles and kisses with my girls and myself. I have called the vets with my concerns and they said they will take note to always fully explain the procedure from now on and that the vet I saw always chooses the method of injection in tummy only and no gas; since the gas stresses and prolongs the whole process. I don’t know if I’m being fobbed off.

I'm so sorry. ((HUGS)) to you. I've had small animals put to sleep using various different methods... one was simply given something to drink that caused a massive overdose. Another did get the large needle to the heart and lung area, but had been given inhaled anesthesia first so was asleep for the procedure. I think it's good that you shared your concerns with the staff. It's an upsetting time and it seems only right to tell people what the process is going to be beforehand. Unfortunately, it's really the only thing you can do at this point. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a similar situation with one of my ferrets years ago. I still feel sick when I think about it. You did the best you could. Try not to be too hard on yourself. It was brutal to watch my poor ferret. I imagine your experience was as well. Hugs to you. I'm so sorry 💔😢

I would think the three injections in the tummy would be more distressing, but I am no vet. I'm so sorry 💔

I agree. It’s causing me heartache to think even his last moments, my baby had to suffer. I can’t seem to get over this.
Please take time to grieve... try and remember all the lovely moments you had xx
