I was about to go out and do the piggies dinners tonight, peered out the patio doors to see how hard it was raining, and to my utter shock and horror saw a brown rat on the front of one of my hutches gnawing at the wire and pulling the hay out from between the bars :o :0

I went flying out the door and the thing ran under the hutch, my OH got a rake and tried to hit it as it came out again but it was too fast.

All my piggies are now indoors in various boxes, ballpits and even what was an underwear drawer - we are in the middle of moving and the flat is upside down, and now full of piggies. Luckily Mum has loads of spare space as the boarding is very quiet at the moment, so in a minute we are going to head up to hers en masse.

What has scared me most is I know my next door neighbour has had poison down as I found a dead mouse on Sunday, and he told me he has been using it. I am petrified how long the nasty rat was at the front of the hutch, what if it has eaten poison and it's somehow infected my piggies?!

Thank God we are moving from here on Friday and I can leave the rat here, we are moving the hutches into a shed at the new place which should be much safer I hope.

I feel physically sick and like I have let my babies down horrifically :(

Oh gosh what a nasty shock but how lucky you were there and saw the rat. You have not let them down at all. This is not your fault. They are safe now and that is all that matters.

Oh my God that's awful :(
Don't worry though your piggies are now safe, out of the rain and away from the rat!
I hope your new place is lovely.

I wouldn't worry about it infecting your pigs, I would say its highly unlikely. Don't feel bad :) they're safe and sound now.

i know how you feel! we're having to rip out the rabbit shed an put a new floor in to stop the !

Oh you poor thing. We had quite a fright when we had a mouse which we just couldn't get rid of. I told my younger brothers that it was a french mouse called Pascal, and he was would run away he they shouted "ooo la la" at him. It stopped them being scared but really made us seal away the guinea pig food and bedding more carefully. Might be worth getting pest insurance if you have troubles again. My dad said if would have cost a fortune without our insurance as we had to have a man out six times to deal with our problem.

Well, they say you're never more than about 10m from a rat, you were just unlucky enough to see it so don't feel you've let your pets down.

I'm sure your piggies are fine, you'd have more to worry about if you had a dog or cat and they ate a rat that had eaten poison.

Just got back from Mum's, all piggies are now tucked up in their holiday hutches until we are settled over the weekend.

I feel so bad still, I try and keep it clean outside and don't keep any food out there but all I can think is I must have dropped some on the floor at some point and it has picked up on it.

I will definitely tell the man next door about it as his dog is a terrier type and I would hate for it to eat it and get poisoned. I don't like foxes in general but quite worried one will eat this rat and get sick, as I don't actually want to kill anything - if we find any dead bodies when we move can we dispose of them in the rubbish so a fox or cat won't get them, does anyone know?

They say moving is stressful, I bet they don't factor in emergency trips late at night to remove your piggies from a pest threat!

This reminds me of the time my cats got into my room. They were trying to get my piggie through the bars. It scared me half to death!:...

they do say we are never further than 5 ft from a rat, with pigs kept outside the chance of food spillage is very high and its easy for pigs to knock food out the cage when they are rooting around in the cage, make sure the wire on cage is 1/4 x 1/4 " sqaure, any bigger and mice will get through and be sitting in food dishes peeing on the food.
