Anyone had a problem with Excel Herbage recently?

I have opened a new bag and in the first few handfuls I have found a piece of mysterious grey material, a chocolate wrapper and a piece of parcel tape.

I have emailed them and am waiting a response as needless to say I am not very happy.

That's shocking! You've definately done the right thing by getting in touch with them.
A few months ago i found a small dead dried up frog in one of the packs i opened! I didn't contact them about it but i will do so in future if i find anything else :)

Recently I had quite a few bits of orange rope pieces in some p@h hay. I'm waiting to get a response from them about it. I also found a cable tie thing in another bag of hay.

Can't imagine what I would do if I found a dead frog :{

I'm so glad I check the hay before feeding it to my girls else they could have easily eaten it.

I once found a dead frog in p@h hay but I was more upset when I found an alive earwig eeeeeeek I screamed rofl

Burgess have asked me to post them the bits so will do that at the weekend.

OH said not to complain just stop buying it, but my pigs love it and this is the first time in about 4 years I have had a problem so want to give them the chance to resolve it.

Also I think they need to be told when their product is not up to standard otherwise how can they improve it?

The jollys hay has been bad in the last few months too!
It was ridiculasly damp! You could feel the damp as you pulled it out of the bag, and it filled out room with the milduey dust stuff...Not good for an asthmatic >.<
I think the producer was almost trying to get 2 lots f hay out of one field, it's been pretty bad lately=/
My friends found an old grenade shell and a blade in her jollys hay before :/

I think I'd totally freak out if I found a dead frog in my hay!

Well...You can't really in this country anyway lol
For a start, I don't think you can grow decent grass in the winter. If you did get a decent amount, it would most likely be damp/wet and wouldn't be able to dry out nicely, so it would mean bales of wet, most likely smell hay =/

The corn sheafs that we collected up in the spring where ever so slightly rained on, when we un-covered the trailer, the middle of the pile was black...Litterally =/ It was too damp & moudly to put through the threshing drum really, and it kept clogging it up.

I would definitely complain (still waiting to hear back from my complaint to p@h!) It's their quality control problems and someone might just put these things into their piggies cages without realising

I've never had a problem with the Herbage but we found a big black feather in our P@H timothy hay last time (thankfully they gave us a free one when we produced the feather!).

Well it has been over 2 weeks now and no follow up from customer services.

They have my email address I feel they could have emailed to say they have received the items or they have not received the items just to keep me updated on what is happening.

But nothing, not very impressed.

How is it going with the P@H home?

P@h responded to my email eventually and just apologised saying they were in contact with someone to make sure this doesn't happen again. I made my point :)). If you haven't heard anything soon, I would email customer services to confirm they received the items.

A few months ago I had unidentifiable bits of grey stuff and odd bits of tape in with the herbage and was rather unimpressed, probably should have also complained to their customer service but after a childhood of venturing into the hay barns at stables I wasnt overly surprised, no nest of mice so ok.

Am now scared in case i find a dead (or alive 0_o) creature after reading these comments lol

xo

I found baling string in my herbage recently, took photos too, so just need to send a complaining email off.

btw, in response to earlier comments about hay and time of the year, hay is usually baled once a year in late summer/early autumn so it's the same crop you are using all year, round, but obviously it will start to get damp/dusty etc if not stored correctly in the meantime.

Well the day after I posted that I hadnt heard I got a letter of apology and £10 worth of vouchers to use on burgess products.

So it is worth complaining if you are not happy

I've definitely noticed a reduction in quality the last few weeks but mainly that the hay is more finely chopped, less stalky and less green. I've not found anything untoward in there but I'd be livid if I did! I think I'm going to get some from www.hayforpets.co.uk - a few people on the rabbit forum have had very good experiences from there and it's much better value than the excel stuff too.

I haven't had a problem with the herbage before however the last bag of excel nuggets I bought was invested with cobwebs and what appeared to be a little maggot-y thing :{ I took a picture and emailed them it, they then wanted a sample and once I'd sent that they sent out £10 worth of vouchers. They were pretty quick about it.

I get excel herbage, and the nuggets, too. I have noticed that the herbage is been alot coarser, less green, and shorter. The first few bags I got were lovely soft hay, very fresh looking, but this bag has not been good at all. I hope the others are ok, as they were on special offer from vetuk, I ordered 6!

Hate to say it but as a horse owner hay in general is not great this year, to be honest it wouldnt suprise me if we all struggle to get it for our GPs later in the year, farms are running out now for livestock etc, the hay we are having is imported which is cut differently (bailed green rather than dry yellow like here) so that is probably why we will run into more problems with damp GP bags of hay etc :(

My Grandad & his friend make hay & straw, so *hopefully* I should be able to get a few decent bales this year :) I jsut need somewhere to store it haha!

That sounds like it was infested with Indian Meal Moths (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianmeal_Moth). I hope they didn't get out in your house, they're a bloomin nuisance. I've had them here for a few years now with no real hope of getting rid as there's just too much food laying around for them to enjoy rolleyes

They're not very active this time of year but if you find you have an issue come the spring, make sure you have Burgess pay for someone to come round and sort it out for you.
