Bella One of our trio of piggies over the last couple of weeks has been drinking a lot of water sometimes for 5-10 minutes at a time, being fairly new to having guinea pigs is this something that I need to worry about or is perhaps as it is the summer months she just needs plenty of hydration (she is a long haired pig)?

Thank you in advance

My girls were drinking more, from what I could see in the start of summer months, I took them to the vet and she said to keep an eye on it and record the amount taken each day. I couldn't see anything sinister lurking, so I carried on as normal with them.

It could be diabetes though, I would see your vets, 5-10 is a very long time for piggies to drink. Do you wash their veg on the same day you give it, they should get most of their moisture from veg?

Hi, welcome to the forum! :) How long have you had your piggies for?

Hi chief guinea pig, we give them fresh clean veg every day and also the occasional bit of fresh fruit, and Katanamoon we have had the two girls since feb this year and the male we have had since December.

Hi! If you are worried, please have your piggy checked by a vet. It can be just a phase; it can be the beginnings of a UTI (urinary tract infection) which is more frequent in spring and autumn around the time when the temperatures are up and down most. Changes in the climate can bring on temporary changes in drinking habits (like the beginning of the indoors heating etc).

Any guinea pig that is drinking 300ml of water or more in a day should be checked for diabetes or kidney problems.

Piggies do vary in the amount they drink, but as @Wiebke says anything over 300ml is a worry and needs a trip to the vet. Changes in how much they drink can be a sign of a UTI, but it could also be the temperature. I would get her checked out by the vet to be sure.

Excessive drinking is a sign of illness, normally caused by infections
