Ever since the summer we have been getting through a lot more water than we usually did, but in the past two weeks it’s gone up even more, it’s mostly Pepper drinking in the past 45 mins he has been at the bottle 5 times, we are not getting through about 300ml a day, we only have one bottle between the two of them but that 300ml is mostly pepper as Pringle is not a big drinker.

Pepper also has had soft poops for a few weeks, I took him off veg gave him fibre plex and they improved, but as we went back on veg they got worse again, so we are back off veg and on some recovery foods and fibreplex.

He was also on Metacam for two weeks which ended last week, this was for some scaring from a URI that we think was causing weight loss, the vet put him on it for two weeks and his weight was higher than it had been in months but as soon as he stopped taking it it dropped again and has slowly being going down since, it’s dropped by 50g which I know isn’t loads but he wasn’t fully back to his healthy weight so I know this weight is a bit under weight for him.

I feel like I’m a bit at a loss with what could be up with him, could all this be down to his URI from months ago, or could he have some tummy issues going on too?

I have also checked his wee but that all
Looked fine.

I will get him booked in to the vets again but I guess I’m just wondering if anyone has experienced similar issues? I feel like he hasn’t been right for most the year and we have a cycle of soft poops and weight loss.

He is still very bright in himself, charging around constantly!

Hello, I'm so sorry to hear of the trouble you're having with your little one.

I would get your vet to check your piggies kidneys. My first piggy was drinking a lot more water and it turned out to be renal failure. Perhaps stopping the pain meds meant he was not feeling too good and so stopped eating and therefore losing the weight.

Perhaps if his kidneys are an issue then it would explain why he has not been right for a while.

You said that you'll take him back to the vets so hopefully you will get some answers.

I wish you and your fur-baby the very best xx

Hi

Please have your piggy checked for potential kidney problems or - much more rarely - potential diabetes (which is treatable and often settles down again; we can give diet advice if needed).
Both issues can be connected with weight loss.

All About Drinking And Bottles (contains some useful information)

All the best!

I think I may have figured out what it was! He was off veg with his soft poops and I was giving him the burgess recover nuggets, he has gone back on veg now and the excessive drinking has stopped, so I’m thinking it was lack of veg and extra nuggets making him a thirsty pig!
His weight loss still remains a challenge, he can’t seem to hold it without daily Metacam so I’m going to keep out appointment for Thursday to try and get to the bottom of this.

That's super that he is eating veg again. Glad you are still taking him o the vets though, just to be on the safe side.
As a piggy slave, we have so many jobs, investigator/detective is certainly on the list of jobs. Makes you feel good when you feel you have worked something out to make piggy feel better.

Just got back from the vets, Pepper still has some scaring from the URI a few months ago, although his check does sound better than last time. He will be staying in the Metacam for atleast another month, his weight was 1133g this morning which is the highest we have seen in months.
His drinking has gone back to normal since he has been back on veg and about 50-100ml per day so the vet was not concerned about that.
Here is the Metacam junkie very pleased with the big bottle we got!

If you take a piggy off fresh food, they need to get their fluid from elsewhere.
Glad that it hasn't been anything serious.

Don't tell me - I have just gone through the whole lot in a matter of three months (was supposed to last me for half a year) and had to get a new big one. :yikes:
Yes I (well them!) managed to polish off a 100ml bottle in less than 3 months that should’ve lasted a little longer over the summer with Cleo, Lolo and then Jasper all at it! These drug-gobblers do get through the stuff at speed sometimes! :))

So glad it was nothing serious with your beautiful boy @rp1993, bet he’ll enjoy knocking that back anyway! :)) Big kisses to Pepper :)❤️ x
